Game Review (written by Typhoidmarty) Added on: 01/30/2007
This was my first ever Computer RPG and somehow it is still every bit as fun now as it was then. Modified text based combat the game proceeds by moving forward in 10ft sections. Every move stands a chance of a random encounter so plan your route carefully.
One downside to the game that I should mention here is the lack of a map function which really proves difficult to directionally challenged people such as myself. I countered this with making one using graph paper which I found tremendously immersing but this option might not be for everyone.

When combat occurs a number or letter (depending on version) lets you choose to attack, cast a spell, flee etc.
I think the classes really make this game for

me – they are so varied! From memory I remember warriors, several classes of mages, rogues and of course bards! I found that party balance was key to success in this game.
The first three slots are the “forward” slots – these are the characters who take damage from melee attacks so I recommend at least a couple of warriors. I normally rounded out the first three with a bard as they took damage pretty well and could deal out very nice amounts (especially by initial standards) with their fire breathing horn. The next three are well suited to archers and spell casters. While initially weak spell casters quickly become fearsome foes so I recommend loading down on a couple of these.
The party consists of 6 slots + 2 specials – summoned creatures or NPCs the party might come across. Progression is fun and really shows as character power – as well as monsters goes markedly upwards.
Also look for hidden areas as they are key – the wine cellar in one pub is the first dungeon players can get into, and it runs several levels deep although this will take many journeys to surmount. Down in the depths’ of these catacombs can be found the secret to entering the dungeons in the temple district and so the game progresses.
I am concerned about the spells though honestly because originally the player had to type in a 4 letter code unique to each spell – I only hope a pdf, doc or scans of the book are included in this download package.
If you enjoy this game think of picking up Wizardry – I believe the latest version was 8 – because I cannot think of any other games with such a robust and entertaining class system.
