Game Review (written by Xacrote) Added on: 01/06/2007
King's Quest II: Romancing the throne is, obviously, the second in the legendary King's Quest series by Roberta Williams. This game follows leads the newly crowned king Graham of Daventry (see King's Quest 1: Quest for the Crown) on his epic journey to rescue the fairest damsel in all the land and make her his queen. Naturally the default setting of any damsel is 'in distress' and princess Valanice is no exception.
For no reason that's ever adequately explained, a cruel and wicked witch has sealed her away in an ivory tower, guarded the tower with ferocious beasts, and set the whole mess on a magic island that is sealed away behind three enchanted doors.

the three golden keys from the depths of Neptune's seas, the cliffs atop the highest mountains, and from the clutches of the Prince of the Night, Dracula himself. You'll also have to overcome countless other deadly obstacles; it wouldn't be a proper Sierra adventure without death at every turn, after all. The best advice for this (or any other Sierra adventure game) is to save often and save well.
You should also pick up anything that isn't nailed down, and if it is nailed down look for loose nails. Look at, look in, look under, around anything suspicious and if it looks hostile, it probably is. Use common sense and remember your fairy tales for solutions to many of your troubles. It's possible, make that probable; to end up stuck facing certain gruesome death with no way to go back for what you need.
Don't give up, just go back to an earlier save and look for ways to get past on your next try. The world is filled with familiar fantasy figures like mermaids, a Genie in a magic lamp, and grandma's house (that occasionally houses a big bad wolf, complete with teeth 'the better to eat you with') Keep in mind that this is an adventure from 1987, the graphics aren't great and you give instructions to your character by typing into a command line.
Many complained that the storyline of this game was too loosely held together and the clues too vague but hopefully, with some helpful aid of this review, the dedicated gamer should be able to conquer this classic adventure.
