Game Review 1 (written by Taintedsight) Added on: 11/21/2006
I first played wings with my brother when I was about 10. I loved it. Its graphics, even then didn’t blow me away, but it did have huge gameplay. The idea of flying against the Germans was very appealing to me, I had a Grandfather who had told me stories of the war, and it captivated me.
In the game you take on the role as a pilot station in France as the RAF try to thwart Adolph’s run into Europe. My brother and I would take turns at the Dogfighting and I would do the bombing, he the strafing missions.

Maybe the storyline was what kept it going or the continual hunt to beat the red Barons score. I don’t know, all I know is that weaving left and right between the enemies was immense fun and I missed the game when our Amiga was sold to make way for the shiny PC my parents had bought.
The game back then appeared huge, with missions coming thick and fast. I loved the dogfighting and it was always fun to take out the enemy, without suffering losses to your own Sortie. The bombing missions were, in my opinion, the toughest ones, The flack always found a way to send me spiralling back to earth and diary entries were an interesting side story. Until then,

the games I played were very one dimensional, no real plot.. I cant say how historically correct the events are, nor do I care. The game has great longevity, unlike some games death doesn’t send you back to level one, just start a new pilot and get your wings, the war doesn’t stop for anyone.
My brother and I both loved this game and along with Pirates, soon became our two top games, many a rainy afternoon was spent trying to get 100 kills or to beat each others most recent escapades. In short, the game today still holds great fascination to me and will always have that little bit of magic about it. I don’t do ratings, but like Carlsberg, if I did, this might be the best game ever, probably.

Game Review 2 (written by Pixieelf) Added on: 10/19/2006
“Wings” was created in a moment of genius by the boys at Cinema ware in 1990. I remember buying the game, and then losing the next few weeks of my childhood locked in my room refusing to move away from the screen.
Centered on the First World War you begin the game by completing a randomly selected mission in order to earn your wings. From that moment, the scene is set. You are placed in a squadron, and tasked with keeping the squadron diary which, in game, serves as the narrative for the storyline.
Missions are ranged between Dog fighting, Strafing, and Bombing, with Dog fighting getting the larger percentage given out. I always found the strafing to be the most tenuous of the missions, normally resulting in a failure, or a 'skin of my teeth' passes. Bombing missions were always straightforward, and over relatively fast.
Dog fighting was the main part of the game, with the missions split between shooting down balloons, and taking out various types of fighters. You had to be fast on the dogfights, as any wingmen you had would be quick to take down your targets before you get the killer shot in.
The other part of the game which made this special for me, were the 'leader boards' that would show you your kill count in relation to the other real-life Aces of the era. At that time, playing that game, I believe that most things paled in comparison to the moment when you finally overtook the Red Baron, and then eventually took your place at the top of the leader board. On the reverse side of that, this game was novel in that after you died in battle, your name would remain on the leader board, and you would be forced to create a new pilot, go through the process of earning your Wings once again, and then continue fighting the war from the exact point that your last pilot took one for the team, and dropped his plane the wrong side of the line.
Overall, in my memory from approx. 16 years ago, this game always stood out as one of the most entertaining I had ever played on the Amiga. The graphics were above average for the period, and the music... Well, I can still clearly hum the music in my head that plays during the diary scenes. And I honestly believe I will never forget it either.

I loved this game. It gives you an insight to what it was like back then. The screen play is good, for its day. I use to play hours on end. I would love to complete it. It is highly addictive.

I got this game for my 10th birthday and loved it, especially the diary entries! The only sad point was that I never completed it.

Wow. it's so nice to finally find this game. I forgot all about its name! This was one of the few games I miss from the Amiga era. I spent so many days playing it and as someone said "the experience of shooting down an enemy bi plane is so so so exciting!" I love this game!

I met my best mate playing this game in 1991 and even mentioned it in my best man speech at his wedding. It is the best game ever and I want to play it again although I know my career and my family will suffer. Bring it on!

Fantastic game, had it years ago but Amiga broke before I could finish it. Far too many hours spent playing, very addictive.

I played it to the end, even though my Amiga was dying and I had to reset it every 15 minutes or so. I couldn’t trade it in until I killed the Red Baron.
