It was the greatest game I’ve ever played. A strange concept for a game, you are a caveman doing what cavemen used to do - avoid being eaten by dinosaurs, collect food to feed your family, and collect women to procreate with. But it’s very interesting!
Firstly, the food: wandering around the screen are all sorts of modern fast food on legs - fries, burgers, sausages and the like. You come up to them and whack them with your caveman club, drag them down to the spit roast in the corner of the screen, and nuke them.
Once they're done, you drag the barbecued food back to your cave and toss it in to feed your brood.
Secondly, the dinosaurs: also wandering around the screen is a variety of scary dinosaurs that will compete with you for the be-legged fast food. If you run into one of them, you're dinner and you lose a life.
Thirdly, the women: This is the bit that I always loved, and possibly the bit that would be most likely to enrage censors in these modern times. A good caveman has lots of wives, and it's your job to whack as many of them over the head as you can, and drag them unceremoniously by the hair back to the cave. She cries as you thump her - great
fun for the kiddies!
During the course of the game, the background season changes between winter and summer, and every summer the stork flies in, dropping a new baby into the cave, and giving you a new mouth to feed. Sometimes one of the kids leaves home - we could never figure out if it was because they got too old and were kicked out, or if there simply wasn't enough food and the kid died.
The music is good and the graphics are laughable by today's standards - it's hard to tell exactly what the walking foodstuffs are meant to be, and the kid leaving the cave appears to do so without a head. It’s very fun!
