Golden Axe was my absolute favourite game growing up. It was simple but good enough that you can play it over and over again. The graphics for its time are good enough that you don’t wonder what something is. Now the basics are the same as many games of its era: hack and slash getting deeper and deeper into the story line until you beat the final boss and gain the almighty victory over evil...
It had a unique quality unlike most I played in that it had three unique characters to play.

It had a unique quality unlike most I played in that it had three unique characters to play. You could play the tall strong barbarian that had a medium ranged broadsword high damage and had medium magic, the sexy female Amazon using her medium ranged sword and her high magic,
or the short stocky dwarf with his long ranged axe and minimal magic ability. The main difference between each is their amount of mana and what spells are cast on the enemy. The barbarian’s spells consist mainly of a lightning form, the dwarf’s a more earth oriented form, and the Amazon’s focuses on pure fire.
My favourite character was the female because her greatest magic attack is a massive red dragon that enfolded the whole map in a fiery inferno of death. Another great feature of the game is the mounts you can take from the enemy fighters. Occasionally one will come in with a little baby dragon that you can mount for an extended melee attack, then there is the two different dragons one with a flame burst in front of it and the red one shoots fireballs.
Now for the bad guys this game wasn’t exactly lame or slow on them. Throughout the whole game you can range from the most basic grunt with a mace to a gigantic hulking knight with a sword that looks like it belongs with cloud in final fantasy seven. The grunts are simple little kills that just change colour as they get stronger and then take more hits, be careful though they corner you in groups and just make you want to throw the controller sometimes.
As you progress through the game you encounter Amazon women that take a bit more to kill and do a bit more damage. Shortly into the game you encounter your first giants, big figures that tear you apart if you try to one on one them. Then later you encounter hulking knights that take up half the screen and can hit you over the half. The final bosses tend to be nothing but upgrades or multiple foes you have already encountered. Put it all together and throw in the mediocre storyline that you can read in between missions and you have an intriguing game that you can play for hours on end.
