Game Review (written by Chrissi) Added on: 12/04/2007
Karateka is a great combat simulation where you will be attempting to rescue the Princess Mariko from the evil fortress of Akuma. As the player you are trying to beat the guards in the castle to reach the evil Akuma and combat him to rescue the beloved princess.
The combats have been done in a side scrolling view showing the two players in combat. The fight consists of various punches and kicks, each having three different levels of height for contact. This does limited the amount of moves you can do, but some will do more damage then others.

beginning to get low take a rest stop by not attacking or getting attacked. You will be able to see your opponents health points as well, so you are fully aware of how much life they have left to defeat them. Once one person runs out of all their house points who ever still has points has won the combat. There hasn’t been a save mode installed into this game, so you will be unable to save your position for later play. The game isn’t too long so it is not like you will have far to go the next time you play to get to your previous point of action.
Karateka can be a bit of a difficult game at times. There are so many things you have to keep in mind while traveling through the castle, you may find yourself getting defeated once or twice when you first start off. After you have attempted your first few combats though you will determine what way to hit the guards and where. The graphical appeal in the game is the basic arcade like format with superb animation. The animation that has been incorporated into the combat scenes is phenomenal. It runs smoothly and with the movie like atmosphere in the background, you will just be enthralled with the games graphical appeal.
Karateka is a phenomenal side scrolling combat simulation that many age groups will enjoy. With this game being a great classic, you will find yourself playing it over and over again. It would have been better to have a save mode, but this just gets you playing more each time instead of leaving where you left off. Karateka is by far a great combat simulation that I would recommend to any player who just loves to go through games and defeat everyone in their path without a weapon. Overall Karateka is a great game that all should attempt at least a thousand times in their life span.

This was the first game I ever got as a kid used on the Apple. This game reminds me of when I was a kid and still is just as fun as it was when I first played this.
