North & South is an action strategy game which has been based on the American Civil War. As the player you will be taking part in the Civil war combat selecting to either be on the North side or the South side. You have the option to start the game between the years of 1861 to 1864, each having a different selection of armies and states to start out with.
The game has been designed with a map of the USA that has been separated into the states and the territories which you will have the option to move your armies units throughout.

As the player you will be taking part in the Civil war combat selecting to either be on the North side or the South side. You have the option to start the game between the years of 1861 to 1864, each having a different selection of armies and states to start out with.
The game has been designed with a map of the USA that has been separated into the states and the territories which you will have the option to move your armies units throughout. Some states will have a railway station where there has been a fort placed in their area. If the
enemy teams are able to capture this location they will take over the whole state. You can also capture states by simply moving to them if they are not occupied by another army.
There is the option to reinforce your armies which can be done by either turning on the option in the main menu where the player who is in control of the North Caroline state will get ships carrying reinforcements for them; as well the railways will bring in money which will allow you to purchase new soldiers.
When two armies come into contact they will begin to battle it out. The winner is generally depends on the amount of units you have and how your luck will work for you. The results are randomized so there is no possible way to actually make the game favor you. Both teams will have the option to retreat out of the battles, making it that neither loose, but what ever men you’ve lost up to that point will be gone. When an army is attempting to capture the enemies’ fort or take a train, these results will as well be randomized. This allows the game to go in any way for anyone.
During the battle screens the action elements have been changed compared to the maps screen. Each of the players will begin on opposite positions of the screen where they will take control of their army which has units consisting of infantry, cavalry, and cannons. The army can consist of six infantry, three cavalry, and one cannon which don’t seem like a lot to start off, but eventually you will be able to get a huge army. You are only able to have a maximum of six infantry, three cavalry, and three cannons in total taking part in the battle scenarios. As the player you are only unable to move one of these unit groups at a time, but the computer player is able to control all three at a time.
The battles will generally last until one of the armies dies, but there is the fabulous option to retreat. Either side that is in combat will be able to retreat if they own the state that is adjacent to the combat state. When you retreat you will loose any of the cannons that you are using in that battle. The computer will retreat when all of their cannons are taken out, as well as when the enemy has triple the units then their units.
The graphics have been done in a third person perspective with a top down view point. Some areas of the game will have a side scrolling point, which usually is when you are attempting to capture a fort. There is a lot of color and smooth animation that allows this game to be what it has become.
Overall, North & South can be a very comical, but strategic game. The game is not too complicated when it comes to the overall games plot since your fate pretty much relies on luck. There is a lot of strategic thought that will have to come into your overall moves, but generally everything is very basic. North & South can become a very addicting game, if you’ve enjoyed strategic action packed games in the past then there is a definite chance North & South would be a perfect selection for your gaming collection.
