There have been many platform games in the past, but none like Popeye. The game is designed around the very popular television show called Popeye that definitely made the show even more popular. There can be two players playing turned based or you have the option to play on your own with there being a track record of the top five high scores with your initials placed amongst them.
The whole aspect of the game is for you to collect several items throughout many platforms designed levels.
There is a total of twenty-four hearts, sixteen music notes, four letters spelling out the word help, and the avoidance of several characters such as The Sea Hag and many dangerous items lying around.
You will have to ability to control Popeye to walk around the screen being able to go straight, backwards, up, and down with the use of your joystick. There is the ability to use your punch button in the game, but no option to jump. This is surely mind boggling especially for a platform game.
Every single level you will discover a can of spinach, which is of, course your favorite snack. When you go up to one of these cans and punch the can of spinach you will become invincible
for a certain amount of time. The invincibility will allow you to knock out Brutus by running into him. This doesn’t kill him though, so you will always be looking out for him coming up trying to get you. The spinach is sadly only able to be used once per level and once you loose a life it won’t be restored, try collecting as many hearts you can before you use this item.
At the top of every round level there will be a punching bag that you will get good use out of. With this punching bag it will assist in knocking down barrels that are in the near area. If you are really good with timing you will get Brutus many times and be having a lot of fun doing so. This will make Brutus harmless for a little period of time, but it’s never enough.
To gain points you will be collecting all the hearts that Olive Oyl is throwing down for you to get. It is best to attempt getting them closes to the top because they decrease in value the further down the screen they get. You will have approximately ten seconds to get these hearts once they land on the bottom or you will break Olive’s heart and loose a life.
The game has been designed in the platform arcade format with a large amount of graphical detail for the years of creation. The overall design of Popeye is phenomenal for it being based on a classic cartoon that we all know and love. The game does increase in difficult the further along you get, but this is only expected in platform games.
Popeye is a superb game that you will grow with and become very addicted. I recommend downloading it immediately!
