Street Rods is an absolute awesome game! There are so many fond memories.
Needless to say it doesn't compare to the driving simulators of today, but it was from a different era of gaming. This was the era when gaming was quirky and fun! And it pretty much sums up what street rods are.
The game basically starts you off in the mid 60's. It's the start of summer, and you have a bit of money. It is enough for you to get your first set of wheels (basic transportation).
With this equipped, you are all set for exciting nights of street racing.
You spend your time at your local hangout, a coffee shop of some kind. Racers will come and invite you for a drag or a road race. Every time you win, it is in the form of cash, or an entire car! From here, you use this money to fund your 'upgrades' to your car. Whether it's racing slick tires, a new transmission, or a big V8, it's guaranteed to make it better. You own as many cars as you want. The better your car is, the harder the competition. However, you can 'clock' the game by defeating the ultimate racer in his 1963 corvette, the 'KING'.
Game-play: I would rate this
out 8/10. The handling is by no means realistic, but they are predictable, and gives your dexterity a bit of a workout. It’s definitely fun changing gears without avoiding redlines and dodging tight corners. It doesn't make you a better driver however.
Graphics: 9/10 (relative to the era) Pretty darn good for EGA graphics!! the cars look actually alright in a cartoonish kind of way. They really worked well with the limited 16 colors they had.
Sound: 6/10 Sound effects are not great, but what do you expect from PC internal speaker. The soundtrack is actually pretty good. A lot of boogie through the period style tunes. It definitely left an impression.
Replay value: 9/10 - I still crack it out once in a while when I've got a spare half an hour to kill. What more can I say. It will still take you a few hours to finish the first time you play it. But with so many cars to choose from, it's enjoyable each and every time.
I reckon they should do a remake of this game on modern consoles. Maybe release it as a Need for Speed - Vintage or something along those lines.
Definitely Download this game guys, you will not be disappointed! Ride the nostalgia wave!
