FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Step 5: Configure your control keys in WinVICE

The following instructions will explain how you select which keys you want to use instead of a joystick to navigate within games. The keyboard will emulate the joystick movements (up/down/left/right) and the fire-buttons. Click on the following menus in WinVICE:
Settings > Joystick settings
Now set Joystick in port #1 to Keyset A and Joystick in port #2 also to Keyset A.
If you want to play against a 2nd human player, select Keyset B for Joystick in port #2.

In the same menu-window (Settings > Joystick settings) you can now configure your keysets:
Click on Config keyset A if you are the only player and select a key of your choice for north, south, east and west and the fire button. South-east, south-west, north-east and north-west are optional and usually not needed.
Save your changes with OK.
If you want to play against another human player, you need to configure keyset B as well now. If you already have a joystick installed on your PC, you can use it to play C64 games by selecting the joystick instead of a keyset.
