Game Review (written by Brensoft) Added on: 05/01/2008 Secret Agent: The Hunt for the Red Rock Rover is a fantastic side scrolling single player platform game for DOS written and published by Apogee in the early 90s. Produced on the same game engine as seen in another classic platformer, Crystal Caves, this time you play as a spy known as Agent 006½ who has been sent to infiltrate the island headquarters of the Diabolical Villain Society (DVS) to retrieve stolen weapon plans for a ruby powered laser (also known as the Red Rock Rover). This game is the first part of three episodes (called missions) and was initially released as shareware. It is followed by Kill Again Island and Dr. No Body.
There are 15 challenging levels in each episode and you are required to destroy the "radar dish" supplying security to the island before blasting your way out of there with dynamite to get to the final “boss” fortress. To get through the levels requires some precise keyboard acrobatics as you jump onto moving platforms and over spikes, shark-containing bodies of water and lava. The levels are also populated with DVS ninja henchmen that come in 5 levels of increasing difficulties. When shot they morph into lower henchmen until they eventually die. There are also laser shooting killer robots that you must avoid! Like most games of this era there are also a stack of power ups and collectables to help you through and let you rack up a stack load of points.
This game is one of many classic games I have fond memories of. I remember playing this game as a little kid and for hour upon hour trying to jump from moving platform to moving platform to get that dynamite and beat the next level. I have even come back to it in more recent times and, despite the aging graphics, have found it immensely enjoyable and definitely enough to keep me occupied for quite awhile.
If you’re a fan of side scrolling games, especially Commander Keen and Duke Nukem, you’ll absolutely love this game and I urge you to give it a try. There are lots of puzzles to solve and traps to dodge. Even if you’ve never heard of Secret Agent or Crystal Caves you should give it a go anyways. While the graphics may look terribly outdated I think you’ll find it as entertaining and challenging as many other games out there.
