Ancient Land of Ys

Game Review 1 (written by Shannon) Added on: 09/13/2009
The Ancient Land of Ys is an old role playing game that is just neat and simple and everything a role playing game is supposed to be wrapped up into a cute little package. By today’s standards, it really doesn’t add anything to genre, but when it was released in 1989, it was awesome. It had everything. It was published by a formerly well known company in Broderbund. It had a fun story line and a heroic swordfighter protagonist.
It had lots of bad guys, several really bad guys and one ultimate bad guy. It has an easy combat system, side quests, a variety of equipment, and an open end to insure a sequel. In fact, it spawned a series totaling seven games, the latest installment being released in 2003.

The story involves a village of farmers who are simple and happy and work together in a communal environment. Then, one of them finds a metal that would be similar to modern day gold and everything changes…for everyone. He shares, and the entire community of farmers prospers until a series of disasters wipe out their crops and their homes. The area wise man declares that the kureria

(the name of the metal) brought the disasters upon them. It is immediately locked away in a magically sealed cave, hopefully to never be heard from again. Years go by and all is well until an evil wizard decides to try to harness the powers of the kureria to use for evil. He steals the six books of Ancient Ys to learn about the kureria. He gives five of the six books to his underlings, and keeps one for himself. The young swordfighting hero has to recover the books and defeat the evil wizard Malificus and his minions to restore peace to Ys.

He will do this by traveling all about a large map, fighting demons and monsters and seeking clues to the location of the baddies. He will partake in an extraordinarily simple fight model where walking into an enemy initiates a battle. Defensive and offensive might depend on two basic factors: the strength of your equipment and the manner in which you attack. The same is true of your foes. If you attack from the front, you will be in a full flung battle. If you sneak in from the back or the side, you can do more damage and take less yourself.

The game continues on in this manner, you fighting and getting stronger and better until you meet the boss characters and eventually Malificus. He’s waiting for you with everything he has and you will have to be well equipped and well versed in fighting to beat him and save the Ancient Land of Ys.

Game Review 2 (written by Nuprometheus) Added on: 10/17/2006
Born from the RPG masters at Nihon Falcom, Ancient Land of Ys is the first installment in the excellent, yet somewhat unknown, Ys series. You play as Adol Christin, a red-headed young adventurer. The game starts with Adol being asked to gather the Books of Ys. Little does he know that he will unravel the mysterious disappearance of the Ancient Land of Ys.
The story is not as heavy or deep as many contemporary role playing games, but that does not stop you from being absorbed entirely in the world that Ys has to offer. Most of the important dialogue in the game is accompanied by a large picture of the character you are speaking to. Although dialogue is not particularly heavy throughout the game, you rarely end up walking circles in search of where to go next. The story leaves off on a cliff hanger note, so it is important to remember that this is just the first installment of a multipart series.
Graphically, the game is on par with games of that era. The sprites, especially the huge boss characters, are adequately detailed and the world is filled with vibrant colors. The animation is on the same level as the graphics. The graphics will not "wow" you, but they will not have you turning away in disgust, either.
The game play in Ys is very different. It is an action RPG, but rather than attacking enemies with a sword, you run into them. This battle system takes some getting used to but once you've gotten the hang of it, the game play is very enjoyable. It's a breath of fresh air, even today, if you are exhausted of the turned based fare. The difficulty level, however, is quite steep, so expect to spend numerous hours leveling up. The bosses in particular are quite tough and may take many tries before they are finally vanquished. To aid in softening the difficulty, several items and weapons are available to the player.
The music of Ys is yet another high point. Although primitive in its delivery, there are some quite catchy, and somewhat complicated, tunes to be heard throughout the game. All of the music, though small in quantity, fits with the situation you are in.
If you are an avid RPG gamer, you should definitely give Ancient Land of Ys a try. It is a hidden gem amongst the vast ocean of role playing games out there.

Great game for old and new RPG players. One of true games that began in the 80's and still are alive today in PSP with Y's: Ark of Napishtim.
