Although the game is based after the last of the Green Sky Trilogy (Below the Root; And All Between; Until the Celebration), it was created as true to plot as any other game of it's time. The plot of the game is to find and rescue Raamo, a leader of political unity.

You can choose to be a boy or girl, and if you want to be a Kindar or an Erdling. Kindars are descended from people in huge trees called "Grunds," and Erdlings are descendants of those who were trapped below the Wissen Root many years before. Each particular character has own strength and weakness.
For example, Pomma is physically weaker than all of the characters, but her spirit skills are more advanced to start with. All characters can fill the deficits they start with by seeking out objects and people in the game to help them. Pomma can find elixirs scattered throughout Green Sky to develop her physical strength, as well as other characters not as skilled in Spirit can increase their spirit skills by finding special characters to speak with, or pensing animals.
As you play the game, you are free to explore the world of Green Sky unimpeded, however, there are enemies lurking the game that can kidnap your character or even hurt them enough to send them back to their tree home, thus losing a day in Quest. The ability to pence can help prevent this.
Your character can also explore underneath the Wissen Root, however special items are required to see in the dark such as a honey lamp, a Spirit Lamp, or a Spirit Bell. Other important items include trencher beaks, vine ropes, and shubas - a garment of clothing your character must use to glide into places that one cannot walk or climb to. You must also find ways to acquire food, as your character is required to eat and rest as necessary or you will lose a day on your Quest.
Below the Root is a very engaging, nonviolent game that is matures enough to engage players, but childlike enough to make you forget your stressful day. I highly recommend this game and it's accompanied books to players who enjoy intellectual as well as gaming stimulation.
