Quest for Glory IV: So You Though You Were A Hero takes place in the fictional land of Mordavia. This is a very innovative game as you have the choice to be a knight, a thief, or a wizard and the game’s quests vary depending on which character you choose. This game is also one of the first games developed by Sierra to have real voices for the different characters as opposed to just dialogue boxes.
While this game has certain puzzles that require a high level of experience playing these types of games, this, along with King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder may be Sierra’s coming of age games.
The game is composed of several small missions that lead to collecting items or solving puzzles. The items collected are then used to solve other puzzles. Some of the most fun had in the game comes during the thief missions when you get to break into houses and must use your stealth to gain items.
This is a thinker’s game but that does not mean that there is no action. When travelling in the woods the main character often must face difficult monsters and other foes that are quite powerful and are capable of causing your character to perish. Depending on which character you have chosen, you will be able to defend yourself in a variety of ways. The magician is weak at fighting
but can cast powerful spells on creatures, whereas the thief is weak yet quick and agile, and the knight is powerful yet slow.
As battles are won, the character’s attributes develop and he is capable of conquering more difficult beasts. This game features some very fun and interesting character’s and has excellent voice work done by the developers of the game. The townspeople of Mordavia are often quirky or scary or funny but all complement the overall premise of the game quite well. This was my favourite game as a kid and I would recommend it to anybody who has never played it.
It has a great mix of action, adventures, and puzzles and it is very tough to get away from this game once you are into it. It is played at a high degree of difficulty so it is probably best to consult an online walkthrough if you get stuck deep into the game as the solutions to the conundrums are far from obvious. But, in the end, this game is an absolute classic and should not be missed.
