This was my first ever adventure game I got in the early eighties and was actually purchased by mistake (I didn’t actually know way back then what an adventure game really was). My initial disappointment was discarded when I realized what a great story telling genre this was. However, I agree the game itself could have been better though I did like the graphics.
This is the first of the Questprobe adventures from the famous Scott Adams and places you as Bruce Banner and the Hulk.
The game actually spawned off two sequels staring Spiderman and the Fantastic Four, which were better. Although my friends thought it was a waste of time I did like the fact that I could go on an adventure which actually needed me to think. Both my brother and I spent hours back then trying the right combination of verbs and nouns to move on. You actually start off bound to a chair with nothing more than your wits. After getting out of it and exploring the great outside, you come across a myriad of Marvel characters and obstacles. Each one must be overcome.
It is possible that you can get killed but that doesn’t end the game as you
go to ‘Limbo’ where you can return to you previous place of death and carry on (I know – it sounds stupid but at least you don’t have to start over again). I know other adventure games later on would make you restart or reload so I did appreciate Limbo in retrospect.
Whilst others have seen this game in a very negative way I can only urge you to try it for yourself and see. Its great for beginners but don’t let the clunky interface get in your way as there is a story out there and is worth completing. This game actually left me impressed with text adventures and I decided to buy the rest of the Questprobe series and other adventure games, especially by Scott Adams. The game itself isn’t that difficult though and can be completed within a short while – though my first ever attempt years ago to weeks. The way to complete the game is to collect gems scattered around. Some of these gems are to be found in some very unusual places, for another Marvel character, Mysterio.
