The first time that I played this game was around 1994 or so. I considered it a great game with moderate graphics and very challenging missions. The game was very true to the characters for the Star Trek TOS series and really brought the game to life for me.
The graphics were average for that time. The sounds on this game were pretty well accurate to the same sounds that came from the series. The real fun part is being in charge of the bridge and being able to order around the crew and fight space battles.
The space battles were ok, if not a little cumbersome. The ability to tell Scotty what his repair priority was immense fun for me. Listening to Spock and McCoy converse with their classic banter was spot on and very, very funny. When you beam down to planets or onto other ships, the ability to use the strengths of your crew members was a very authentic touch that makes this a very strong game. I have recently played this game again for the first time in about twelve years and find myself enjoying it just as much as I did back then. I see this game as one of the best star trek games I have ever played, and
I have played quite a few of them.
It was also the first time that I had played a star trek game and It has left a lasting impression on me up until this very day. I guess if I had to rate the specific parts of the game: graphics - 6.0, game play - 9.0 Difficulty - 8.0. My favorite part of the game of the “Another Fine Mess” mission is where you get to see Harry Mudd again. The banter between the crew and Harry Mudd was classic and hilarious. It brought back memories of the episode of the series with Harry Mudd in it. Having them refer to things that happened between them in the series was very nostalgic for me.
The only part of the game that I found lacking in any aspect was the star ship battles. Sometimes it was almost impossible to get the enemy in front of you to get a shot at them while they seem to be able to get behind you almost will. Other than that small problem, every other aspect of the game was great for me.
All in all, this game is a very strong game and a great first try for Interplay at the Star Trek franchise. I would definitely recommend this game for anyone.
