This game is very humorous similar to the humor represented in the Monkey Island series. The plot is very original. You play as Malcolm, a deranged jester who has been turned into a statue because of his crimes against the royal family. Now that he's been re-animated he seeks revenge.
A great idea, taking the evil Malcolm and making him the main character. You're pretty much trying to clear your name as you are wanted for stabbing King William and Queen Katherine to death. If you are recognized you get reported to the authorities and taken to jail.
Your first task is to leave Kyrandia. After going to the Isle of Cats you catch a ride with pirates who end up selling you to your enemy Brandon. Eventually you find yourself stuck in Limbo and upon escaping Limbo you venture into Hell. Once you make your way back to Kyrandia you must free Kyrandia from the same pirates who gave you up earlier.
The game play is a 3rd person point & click with some interesting puzzles that are not too hard but can be frustrating at times. Pretty much you move Malcolm with the mouse and manipulate objects by clicking on them. Malcom does have a mood meter his different moods change his responses to other characters. The Puzzles
are inventory based where you can carry 10 items with you at a time. Also, when it comes to saving & characters deaths, if you die and haven't saved your game for a while you can hit the "second chance" button and return to just before you died. But it's best to save your progress more often as the game can trap you.
Graphically this 2D game is exceptional w/high quality old school graphics w/a presence of 3D. The video sequences are very nice. It can be a pain as some of the pictures are not obvious that you can click there. This can trick you into thinking you are stuck and can not progress. The music is very nice but what most impressed me is the voice acting w/fully digitized speech.
Overall this game is quite fun and innovative. This is a traditional adventure game w/soo much extra to it. It's non-linear and from what I've read offers 3 different endings. I have yet to play any of the other games in the series but I definitely will after playing this one. My only complaint is that the game is too short.
