I first played the Uninvited on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and was pleased to find that it originally was on the Macintosh, something I enjoy playing as well. The review here is obviously for the PC version, though.
Uninvited by ICOM Simulations is the third game in an adventure series that includes Shadowgate and Déjà vu. This series was one of the first to use the point and click interface in helping adventurers navigate an unfamiliar world.
In this particular adventure, you play a regular guy driving down the road in the middle of a storm.
Your younger brother is in the car with you. Suddenly, a figure darts out in front of you. As you swerve to miss it, you crash into a tree in front of a house, and you pass out. When you come to, you find that your younger brother is now missing! Your only choice is to search the house you find in front of you, hoping to find him.
Fans of ghosts and magical spells will find this to be a very enjoyable experience. There is definitely a flavour of the occult in this game. During the game, it becomes apparent that this house was owned by a powerful sorcerer, who trained other sorcerers. One of them, Dracan, turned to the evil side
of magic, and killed the other inhabitants of the house. The house as you find it is now haunted. This game is not simply about adventuring; fans of puzzles will enjoy this title as well. There are several puzzles that took me multiple tries to complete.
Three major specific tips that are essential for survival in this game:
1. At the very beginning of the game, get out of the car! It’s going to explode!
2. When you first encounter the young woman in the white dress and parasol with her back to you, immediately exit the room. Do not try to open a door, do not touch or talk to her, do not do anything! She will kill you. There is a certain item that you must use on her.
3. At one point, you will find a ruby in a dresser drawer in an upstairs room. Do not pick it up! It will curse you and you will slowly die.
I enjoyed this game; even though I found it to be a bit short and abrupt. The ending does kind of come out of nowhere. Still, download it and give it a whirl for a few hours!
