The game Zero Critical - Satin Rift was originally titled just Satin Rift but was re-released with this new title, although it doesn’t appear much has changed from the original if anything. It’s a third-person graphic adventure game that relies heavily on characters and plot.
With that said, it is a rather odd science fiction game. Zero Critical - Satin Rift is a third person point and click game and you do the standard finding items and objects to use to progress through the game.
A unique point to the game is you need to converse as well to get where you want to go and find out information that is vital but there is no sound, all conversations are done in subtitles a rather strange form of communication in this type of game, it’s a very silent adventure even though talking technology was well under way when Zero Critical - Satin Rift was developed. Music is only played at the beginning and the only other noises you will hear is soft machinery sounds and opening and closing of the doors.
The storyline is great and often times violent and mysterious. You play Chatt Rhuller an Interstellar Transportation Commission Field Agent on the planet Rhoem 1.
Your assignment is to investigate a suicide (or was it murder) of one of the doctors on the planet Rhoem 1 who was working on the Satin Project. The thing is that this planet where it is always daylight has a legend about it; all who stay there are driven to madness. You are out to uncover truth from fiction but your flight off the planet is delayed and you are forced to learn more about this strange planet, the wide spreading madness and the secret mission behind all this.
The puzzles are fairly straight forward and shouldn’t pose many problems to get through. Sometimes the point and click that you rely on to collect items doesn’t work that well and you find yourself going in and out of the room to finally be able to pick it up. The graphics are fair for its day and most every screen is steel grey but I guess that’s what a research lab would be like it in reality, when you finally get to the levels with colours you will really appreciate their brightness.
Zero Critical - Satin Rift isn’t one of my favourite games but I really enjoyed the story and playing for a few hours, well worth the download.
