Assault Rigs was one of the best early games for the Playstation. This meant that the PC version was overshadowed greatly and that many people did not play it. However it is without doubt one of the best games released by Atari in 1996. Even on an ancient Windows 95 the game plays beautifully. The sound quality is great, the graphics are pretty much as good as you could get in those days and the game play is sublime.

Assault Rigs is a game based around a world where only virtual sport is played. It consists of a tank shooting game. You have to collect the gems and fight your way back to the exit to proceed to the next level. With many different
enemies and four distinctly different worlds to play around with, the fun can last for hours. But there is a time limit to each level so complete it quickly. To help you with this task there are many power-ups and bonuses. Shoot a blue box and a laser upgrade might drop out. Run into this and your turret will be upgraded to a laser turret, but only for 15 shots.
No two levels are the same. On level 16, for instance, you can go through the entire level without being damaged or scoring any points just by going over the massive jumps fast enough. But on level 6, you battle four unintelligent computer tanks and collect around 20 gems on a level you can see from one end to the other on easily. And level 25 is remarkably like level 16 except you will have to destroy something.
Presiding over this brilliant carnage is the humorous voice of the announcer. With silly anecdotes, such as “Don’t try this at home kids”; he helps remind you that you are in a game that’s just for fun.
Although the worlds vary greatly there is one thing you can be sure of. If you meet a certain type of enemy in one world, say a one that fires shatter bullets, then you can guarantee that in the other three worlds there will be an equivalent. Maybe not as fast, maybe it fires faster, but there will be one. But there are three particular enemies which seem to appear in every world. These are three different flying enemies. One of them is particularly weak and fires simply the standard bullets. The other two are very similar and fire mini guns or lasers. These are much trickier to defeat and as such are worth rather more points.
The final thing that changes is your tank. For each world there are three tanks. You can choose any of that world’s tanks at the start of a level. However like the computer opponents these are basically the same on each world. They just look different. There will be a fast tank with light armour and a fixed turret; a medium tank with medium armour and a rotating turret; and the slow tank with high armour and a rotating turret. Each of them has their merits and all can be used to complete a level.
This game has so much to offer I would recommend it to anyone. I give it 9 out of 10.
