Back to the Future Part III is technically a collection of four loosely connected arcade games. Marty McFly and good old Doc Brown have again traveled back in time, this time to the year
1885, in order to find people from 1985 and return them home. They almost immediately become embroiled in trouble when the meet “Mad Dog” Tannen’s ruthless gang of ruffians. They have to find a way to avoid this gang of thugs and get back to the future before the gang can hurt them. The game takes four scenes from the actual movie and turns them into arcade sequences, all with western themes reflecting the time period.
The first game is the Buckboard Chase. In this game, the user plays the part of Doc Brown, who goes on horseback. His goal in the game is to save the lovely Clara, Hill Valley’s resident school mistress, who has been kidnapped. It alternates from a side-scrolling view to a top down perspective and features Doc Brown ducking under tomahawks, jumping over chests and shooting his way through a war between the army and some Indians to get to Clara, who would ultimately become his true love. Oh, and he has to pick up her panties on the way.
Marty gets the next go around in Shooting Gallery. Here Marty has to perform in a classic aim and shoot style of game, made trickier by the fact that the targets are very tiny and contain some interesting hidden bonuses. Those cacti are certainly nasty. The third individual game is a pie throwing contest featuring Marty standing in front of a saloon, armed with nothing but yummy crème pies. He needs to fend off the entire Mad Dog gang…who have guns…with an arsenal of crème pies. Thankfully, Marty is wearing armor. This is very similar to the Shooting Gallery. Incidentally, both games can be practiced separately from the main game.
Finally, the user again controls Doc as Doc attempts to take control of a train which he intends on revamping and turning into the machine that will take you all back to the future. This is basically a side-scrolling beat ‘em up, with a little run and run action.
In short, the scenes from the movie Back to the Future III inspired this video game. It is not a bad game, and the cartoony cut scenes between games are fun and engaging. The game play itself is ok, and the variety of games adds to the replay value. It is not a bad download.
