Saffire developed and Midway Games published the late nineties fighting game, Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. It can be a single or multiplayer game and is rated by the ESRB as mature, mainly for its violence. It was originally released as an arcade game, but limited. It saw much more time on consoles, such as the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation. It also played on the modern computer.
Bio F.R.E.A.K.S is a three dimensional fighting game. It features a futuristic setting, and many of the characters are robotic and are given “freak classifications” such as, Synthoid, Dozer, or Retro.
The concept of the game revolves around the fall of America and the creation of fifty individual territories from what remains of its states. There is much competition between the territories for computer technology, cybernetics and mechanics, all of which will lead to territory dominance. Industrial competition is so fierce, that people have become murderous and corporate espionage is rampant. Even the spies are genetically enhanced in what has become Neo-Amerika.
What is left of the U.S. government sees an opportunity to right the wrongs and set the nation back on its collective feet again. They propose to settle all territorial disputes or other differences in an arena using gladiator style combat. If two territories differ and fight,
the winner gains control of the loser, and all of its holdings from previous fights. With many of the territories losing value time and resources fighting one another, this decree becomes the first unified law in decades.
Enter the Bio FREAKS: Biological Flying Robotic Enhanced Armored Killing Synthoids. Created in laboratories and genetically engineered to fight, the Bio Freaks will become the champions of the various states. They use a mix of hand to hand and long range fighting styles, making the user’s fight within the arena’s varied and interesting. The user will have a choice of playing one of eight of these weapons of war. He will have to move through the ten levels and fight in arena style combat the many different opponents set before him and also two boss characters. Versus mode is also available.
One of the thing that sets Bio FREAKS apart from other games of this nature is that the levels or backgrounds sometimes contain traps or other things that can injure your gladiator. Similar to Mortal Kombat, each character has a cool finishing move. These are limb rending, crazy attacks. On that note, strong combination moves can also remove limbs and reveal a lot of blood and damage. The other notable difference between Bio Freaks and other arena style versus games is the option of trading fire from long range attacks. Modes of play include the traditional single player arena mode, versus mode against another human, survival mode (where the person continues to fight the same string of opponents until he dies just to see how many wins he can get) and a team battle mode, which can be up to a five on five duel.
