Captain Goodnight and the Islands of Fear is a funny little platform game that is recommended for some of the more experienced gamers out there. While it is fun and addictive, it is also a one of the more difficult platform games, making it an exciting and awesome challenge for players with a solid background in the run and gun genre. Captain Goodnight and the Islands of Fear was originally created for the Apple II, but was quickly converted to the personal computer running the DOS operating system.
It was a faithful conversion, and all of the challenges of the original Captain Goodnight followed it to the PC. The game hit the personal computer market in the late eighties.
The premise of Captain Goodnight and the Islands of Fear involves and evil doctor who sets up a research facility on the remote Fear Islands. Dr. Maybe, from these headquarters, decides to hold the world at a two hundred billion dollar ransom, stating that the entire planet will be destroyed if the money and ultimatum are not met. The user will play the hero of the game, Captain Goodnight, and will be battling Dr. Maybe’s robots and other mechanized warriors on his way to the doctor’s self-proclaimed Doomsday Device, which will be
blowing up the world when the money is not delivered. The game becomes very similar to a James Bond farce, and Captain Goodnight will control all of the game’s super spy action.
There are tons of things to do in Captain Goodnight and the Islands of Fear. The user will pilot a plane, perform naval attacks, and will execute the much more standard land based attacks. There is a wealth of vehicles for the gamer to learn: a boat, submarine, plane, helicopter, jeep, tank and a tram or teleportal. The user has a lot of controls to learn in order to walk, run and duck, as well as fire weapons. When using vehicles, he will have to learn how to drive the vehicles, and access the weapons, if there are any present. There is so much to learn and so much variety, that the difficulty level increases, making it fun and challenging for gamers who are up for it.
Captain Goodnight and the Islands of Fear has a lot to offer the gamer. On top of all of the action and the options, there are some really funny one-liners, good graphic displays (for its time) and some all around smooth game play. This is a recommended download that can’t do a gamer wrong.
