Chex Quest 3 is the third and final installment in the Chex Quest promotional series. The Chex Quest series is a combination of a Doom-style first person shooter, practically a clone, and a spoof on the Chex breakfast cereal. Chex Quest 3 is a fan made program that is not actually a true sequel, but more like and expansion pack. The original Chex Quest is required to play Chex Quest 3, which was released in 1998 after development by Digital Café.
The premise of the Chex Quest series is aiding a Chex Warrior, who uses armor made from a warped piece of Chex cereal.
The game is a first person shooter that diverts from the violence of classic Doom and replaces it with silly things, often relating to breakfast cereal, but sometimes just being a random thought. In CQ3, guns have become Zorchers, and the Chex Warrior must zorch the oncoming enemies. Those enemies have the same basic attributes as those from Doom, but are now called Flemoids. Cycloptis, Bipedicus, and Flembranes are merely take offs of Dooms demons, shotgun guy, and Baron of Hell respectively. There are also a few new monsters added that are not present in the first two Chex shooters.
Similar to other adventures, the Chex Warrior is equipped with only basic weapons and armor when he begins his march across the planet to seek
and destroy the Flemoids. Power ups can be acquired along the way that will improve the hero’s armor and firepower. Some of the silly weapons from the first two Chex installments are still present, such as the super bootspork, and the rapid zorcher…comical remakes of the chainsaw and chaingun from the Doom series. Courtesey of Doom II, a type of double barrel shotgun has also been added to the arsenal.
Many of the power ups play nicely into the hands of this spoof. The Chex Warrior can pick up bowls of fruit or glasses of water…staples at the breakfast table. There is also slime repellent for the Flemoids and some super chex armor. These elements of humor make the game more interesting, and add depth to its premise.
Overall, Chex Quest 3 has very basic graphics, a straightforward plot, and straightforward play. While it is a very close cousin of the Doom series, the violence is toned way down and there are elements of childish humor that may make it more appropriate for a younger crowd.
