Commander keen is an overall good game with a good story line. You are dropped on a small planet when your ship breaks down, and you must go about fixing it. Unfortunately this means you will have to get down and dirty.
The levels start off fairly simple with a platforming genre. You have a single shot weapon, and use it for the majority of the game. As you progress you are led to collect items from various levels, such as a scuba suit, in order to reach other places on the world map.

The world map has a Final Fantasy (the original) feel. You go about the main map in order to reach larger levels. These levels usually have some "mission" to complete. You are often times required to move through certain levels in order to reach new areas of gameplay. The game over all has a medium difficulty, although you will find yourself on some incredibly easy and some incredibly hard ones. Keen progressing through the levels is highly addicting.
Unlike most Dos based games Commander Keen can be saved, so you can progress over time. The game is very fun. I have enjoyed it immensely over the years. It ranks among the best Dos based games. The hardest levels are those after you get the scuba gear,

even though it is right next to the starting point, it contains some of the most difficult platforming in the game.
You eventually do fix your ship and make your way back home, but on arrival you just get ported away again, thus making playing Commander Keen 5 a necessity. It is amazing how the companies get us that way. I mean there you are going about your Keen 4 playing, and BAM!, you now have to buy another game, but I digress. The game is definitely worth getting and the levels with the caves are the best. Make sure you have some creepy techno music in the background, it makes the whole thing so much cooler. But don't overdo it, those bats are evil.
On a side note, from the menu you can play Pong against the computer. Always a plus =D Bewared the computer and remember to hit the space bar when you hit the ball, makes it go faster and is overall a much better time. But he's tricky. Don't let him fool you with his "I only have artificial intelligence". He's a tricky bastard who will smash you over the head when you least expect it.

Game Review 2 (written by Briabee15) Added on: 10/16/2006
Commander Keen 4 was a favorite of mine as a child because it is an easy game to learn to play and fun to play as well, which is always a good combination. When I played it at my grandmother's house, I was maybe six or sever years old the first time and the game was fairly difficult, even given how easy it is to use the controls. There are really only seven or so buttons needed to play, the up, down, right, and left arrow keys to move forwards or backwards plus ctrl or alt for shooting your laser gun, ctrl or alt for using your pogo stick. Whichever you choose to have them be, when organizing the keys with the control menu. And the space bar for just general jumping, or shooting if you like.
At ten, gameplay was easier but I was still unable to get to some levels. For a number of years I did not play the game at all until last summer I visited my grandmother and was re-introduced, as a 19 year old, to it. All the memories came flooding back, I still remembered what keys to use to do what I needed and found the game was much easier now (perhaps this is from years of consol gaming).
The graphics, while they were decent for the tech age they were made in just look silly and square with obvious pixilation. There is a surprising number of colors used however and the levels themselves are actually pretty good - maze like even - and intricate, getting longer and more intricate as you progress through the game.
The sound is basic midi sound, nothing special and actually more annoying than anything and I recommend playing the game with the sound turned off, otherwise you just get distracted.
The gameplay itself is easy. It is a simple platform game (in the style of super mario). You only just need to shoot your laser gun at the slugs or whatever other enemy you have. Depending on whether you select the easy, medium, or difficult levels, the slugs will either remain stunned for the rest of your gameplay in that level (easy) or stay stunned for only a few seconds. Hard - plus there are more enemies when you choose the hard level.
You get the hang of playing the game very quickly and, given the small amount of levels (there are only 15 or 16 levels in the entire game and first 4 or 5 are short and easy), the game can actually be won completely within a day or two. There is no excitement in winning the game - no fan-fare or getting to replay levels for higher scores (you can, however, replay levels for higher scores before winning the game). You simply win, get a short "congrats" and the game ends. The joy in playing this game is from the nostalgia (if you played it as a child and enjoyed it, in which case you'll probably still enjoy it as I still do), and the simplicity. You feel like you're seven years old again and it's suddenly 1993, the good old years of the Oregon Trail Game and King's Quest. It's a good game for when you’re bored and just want to shoot things for points and gather crystals and what-not. A fun, old-school game.

I love commander keen! It is the best game ever! It doesn’t have the best graphics but it still totally rocks, I love to play this game all the time. I could probably play this game continuously. There are always new surprises.
