Commander Keen 7 - Keen Dreams

Game Review 1 (written by Acidcloud) Added on: 01/03/2007
I loved playing Commander Keen: Keen Dreams. It was a really fun game and was great for all ages. I think that it was a great game for its time (released in 1991).
I first played the game when I was about six years old and I remember that my brother introduced it to me.
I loved the fact that Billy was able to juggle the pellets or whatever they were. I always loved the pogo stick also, but this was NOT in this game of Keen Dreams.

I remember using some cheats for the game but I don't really remember what keys I used.
I loved the enemies! They were broccoli and potatoes and other vegetables.
I liked the fact that you could save anywhere in the game, anytime that you wanted to. This was very handy.
The little flower things amused me as a kid (what the enemies would turn into after you hit them with pellets).
It is old, but it's fun. You should really try this game. It's a classic. Even though it wasn't the best of the Keen Series, it was still a great game and I'm sure you'll like it. It was great game play, but the story was lacking stuff. The game wasn't really that tough. Even though

some people hate it because it's completely different than the rest of the Keen games, it was actually an ok game. It was entertaining, and I though it was nice. Whatever you think about this game is up to you, but I thought it was fun.
Keen Dreams had a lot of levels that you really did not have to go through to complete the game, kind of making them optional. This game was really known but still did not meet up with Keen 4 or 5, but it was still very fun. Many people enjoyed playing this game, as I did, and there are still many who do.
This game will be remembered by a lot of people for a long time. The controls are very easy and you can always change them if you really want to.
All in all, you should try this game because you never know if you will like it or not, because you can't really base your opinion on other people's opinions, because they can be completely different.
It might not be rated the best, but it was still a good game.
As mentioned before, you don't have a pogo stick in this game, which I didn't like, but it still was fun game.

"Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the garden" was its tagline.

Game Review 2 (written by Critical) Added on: 12/22/2006
This in my opinion is the best Keen game in the series. The graphics are comparable to mario 3/ super mario world for the nintendo systems. While the speed is comparable to sonic games! Keen has no more ability than before unfortunately and the game is rather short. The sounds are rehashes from episode 4 and music is non-existent. Don’t attempt to play the game unless you have a dos emulator, anything above a 486 is too fast for the game, and win xp has compatibility issues.
You will find the first and second levels a bit easy but the game gets to near impossible towards the end. Use a joypad for the best control, as the game plays much like 16 bit console games of the same era. This title is actually the lost episode and not number 7 as many misconceive. It falls somewhere between 4 and 5 and was very rare at the time of its release. Back in its time, it had some of the heftiest system requirements of a game, and many people experienced choppy / jumpy gameplay due to non vesa graphics cards. A lot of people had to use boot disks and display tweakers to play the game normally. Once they got past the problem it was impossible to put down. The game was shareware so the opportunity for mass appeal was there, but no advertising or support kept the game obscure. Some argue that this installment should have been packed with episode 4, as it offers no additions to the commander keen cannon, just a side story about keens sister being kidnapped (in a dream, hence the title). There was no sequel based on the events of this game and the title does not carry any info from previous/later games. That fact may have influenced apogee to release this as a standalone episode.
Probably the greatest for speed graphics and gameplay. But the sound is too old to handle, I think 3drealms should do a 3d update, 3rd person with speech, the franchise is popular enough to have a fan base and PC's have jumped in quality enough to make it revolutionary. If the level architecture from keen can be translated into next gen 3d worlds, the possibility is endless, and the story in this one does warrant a sequel. Hopefully they read my review and jump on it! That would be the day eh. Till next time

One of the classic Keen games, this game continued the strong tradition of the adventures of Commander Keen. It's addicting trying to collect everything, and the stry line is alright for a PC game.

There are many problems with the review by critical. First, this game is ega, not vga and VESA standards didn't even exist until VGA came out. VESA was an attempt at standardizing all the different features of different vga cards.None of this should be confused with the vesa local bus standard. CGA and EGA didn't need that since everything was standardized. This game plays fine on a pc-at (286) and probably on a xt as well as long as it has a ega card. Furthermore, this game was not released by apogee (as were the other Keen games), it was released by soft disk as a contractual requirement. This game will run at proper speed on any computer no matter how new or how fast as long as you are booting dos. A great modern idea is to find drivers for your sound card and get a thumb drive and install dos on it as well as all your games and you can boot of of the thumb drive. As for the game, it's pretty good, but nowhere near commander keen 4. 4 (and 5) are the apogee (pun intended) of the keen series.

I tried this game from a recommendation of a friend. It is simple and fun, I think my daughter will enjoy it.

I used to love playing all of the Commander Keen games. They all have their own story line and a simple but fun to play.

this should actualy be titled keen 3.5 (keen 7 was never made due to the release of doom and other 3d games)

People that downloaded Commander Keen 7 - Keen Dreams also downloaded the following games:

Commander Keen 4 Commander Keen 1
Commander Keen 6 Commander Keen 5
Super Solvers: Gizmos And Gadgets Jazz Jackrabbit
