Duke Nukem

Genre: Arcade    |     Year: 1991    |     Publisher: Apogee Software Ltd.    |     Developer: Apogee Software, Ltd.
Game Review (written by Eric) Added on: 01/29/2008
The very first Duke Nukem game was released in 1991 by Apogee. It is a side-scrolling action game that remains popular to this day. Of course it is not as popular as the modern games but among the classic action games, Duke Nukem remains one of the most popular.
The game is pretty simple, you just need to run, walk or jump through different platforms, shoot at enemies and earn bonus items and then deal with the evil boss at the very end of the game.
The controls are very easy to learn and the game itself has average difficulty. It’s not extremely easy that it’s boring and it’s not so difficult that it’s frustrating. There is only one weapon in the game and this weapon becomes upgraded when you pick up the power ups through out the game. But even if there is only one main weapon there are items that can be added to Duke Nukem’s inventory. These items can be useful for certain stages in the game. There is a pair of boots that can help Duke jump higher. There is also a grappling hook that can be used to hang onto platforms. Duke also needs to pick up keycards that he can use

After you go through several stages, at the very last part of the game, you will come face to face with Dr. Proton. There are actually three episodes that you have to go through—Shrapnel City, Moon base and Trapped in the Future.
The graphics come in very limited colors but since the game was released in 1991, it is pretty understandable. The graphics are not so poor as to get you distracted from the game but does feature only 2D graphics. The music and sounds are also pretty decent. The game does not feature the best music and sound effects there are but the sounds work just fine for the game.
The best thing about the game is that it gives you a good time. Even without flashy graphics or complicated game play, the game is able to provide gamers with a great experience. The game can even be very addictive.
But this is a classic game simply because it is perfectly capable of inducing excitement in gamers even today, more than a decade after the game’s initial release. Duke Nukem really is a fun game that you won’t get tired playing. This is definitely worth downloading!

Amazing! Another game I truly thought i'd never see again. Played this when I was a kid, running on an Amstrad and windows 3.1 - so long ago! Can't wait to try this again now, so much later! Brilliant, brilliant game!

I grew up on this game. Love all the different levels. The boss is very easy to kill though, but trying to gain more bonus points are fun.

First game I ever played. I credit this game for my video game playing the rest of my life. As fun a side-scroller as they come.

People that downloaded Duke Nukem also downloaded the following games:

SimCity Classic Duke Nukem 2
Commander Keen 1 Super Solvers: Treasure Mountain
Commander Keen 4 Theme Park
