I first played Earthworm Jim 2 at a friend’s house a couple months ago, when we were going over some old Super Nintendo games. If you have played the first Earthworm Jim you will feel right at home, it plays nearly identical to the original. You assume the role of Earthworm Jim himself, an alien worm that has encased himself in a suit that enhances his physical prowess. Throughout the game you are accompanied by your friend “Snott” which is well, snot.
You can use Snott to grapple on to various pieces of material to swing yourself to ledges that would be otherwise out of your reach. In addition to Snott, you will have a wide array of weapons to use in your adventure.
The
purpose of the game is to prevent the princess from marrying Psy-Cow, an evil villain who wants to take Earthworm Jim’s suit and claim its power as his own. Other characters that you meet throughout the game are a goldfish named Bob, Petter Puppy, and of course, the princess. In addition to these you will find cows scattered throughout the levels which you are supposed to save. There is also a wide array of enemies that will do everything they can to prevent you from completing your mission. If you’ve played the original Earthworm Jim you should recognize a good majority of them. You don’t spend the whole game just running around and blasting things however, you will also have to deal with a lot obstacles that you come across such as exploding barrels, slippery ledges, and spike filled pits.
Visually, Earthworm Jim 2 has overtaken a significant improvement over the original. Everything looks more “clean” with less grainy images and clear backgrounds. The background music is well done and does a good job of complimenting the main game. In addition to the music you will occasionally hear Earthworm Jim yell out a cry of pain, tell a joke, or say one of his goofy catch phrases. If you’ve ever watched the cartoon series you’ll recognize some of them from it.
All in all, Earthworm Jim 2 is a very entertaining game. It’s got plenty of diverse enemies to draw your attention too, challenging obstacles, funny jokes, and my favorite part, a ball of snot for a companion. If you have never played an Earthworm Jim game I urge you to download this one and try it out, you won’t be disappointed.
