"Fury of the Furries" stars an (obviously) furry critter that has the ability to control the four elements: GREEN – Air, BLUE – Water; RED – Earth; YELLOW – Fire. He has returned home from space only to find that his beautiful kingdom has been taken over and the king enslaved by an evil and wicked Furry with a bad temper! He takes it upon himself to battle through areas of great peril and difficulty until he can reach the castle and defeat the wicked Furry to win back their land!
It is impossible not to draw parallels between this and the Lost Vikings games.
It’s not a bad thing. If you enjoyed the Vikings, you will undoubtedly enjoy this. However, they are very different in terms of gameplay.
Compared to contemporary graphics, this game indeed lacks, but it is definitely not the graphics that are the important factor in such a game. They are simple yet sufficiently adequate, placing emphasis on smooth game play with colorful backgrounds and characters.
It is the game play that is key to the success of this simple yet entertaining game. Each Stage (Of which there are 8 and 1 Hidden Stage) comprises of several levels of varying difficulty. These levels are single-screen scrolling based in nature and generally not too large. They vary between vertical and horizontal movement or both. This
is the key to its addictive game play. No level is too long that frustration from not completing it can set in. Some levels are rather complex and it can take time to figure out exactly what needs to be done. It is important which of your abilities you use to achieve certain goals and a clue is always gained by looking at which Furries you are given at the start of a level!
At times, the play can be slow, having to repeat certain things in order to reach the Exit sign, but it is always worth it once you have figured out the puzzles. Especially since each level is given a certain time limit. On some of the larger screens, you’ll be sweating in order to reach the Exit sign in time!
While there is no explanation of controls in this download, they are simple to master. Directions are controlled by the left and right keys. Jump is executed with the UP key and in order to change from color to color, you need to be on a flat surface of solid ground while pressing the down key. You will defragment and can then choose which color you would like to become. Each color’s special ability is controlled with the SPACE bar. These are as follows:
GREEN: Press and hold the spacebar to shoot your rope above your head and attach to any solid object. You can swing from side to side using the left and right arrow keys. Upon release of the spacebar you will retract your rope, which can be shot out again (much like “Spiderman”). In addition to this, some bricks in levels can be pulled out of place by pressing the arrow key towards it, shooting your rope and then changing direction to dislodge the brick.
BLUE: This is simply the ability to swim underwater. All the colors can float but the direction keys will allow you to swim in the chosen direction underwater.
RED: The Spacebar in conjunction with an arrow key will cause your Furry to munch away at broken bricks in order to access different areas.
YELLOW: This element allows you to throw fireballs in order to kill any enemies along the way. Repeatedly tap the Spacebar for small rapid fireballs, or hold it down for one large one.
While not overly creative, the music provides an arcade style accompaniment to your play but can be easily turned off. The SFX are sufficient and again, arcade in style.
There are little gems all over the place. If standing idle for too long, your little Furry will entertain you with a few cheeky moves and expressions. Even during game play, he seems to have a sneaky look on his face, which is endearing. Always check the backgrounds and environment for little clues on what to do if you’re stuck. There are also loads of bonus areas to collect coins – 100 of which will earn you an extra life. This is a surprisingly addictive little game. It won’t fry your brain but it won’t leave you gagging for a piece of dry bread to play with either.
