Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade - The Action Game was a decent game for the commodore 64 (and other systems.) I recall playing it when I was much younger and didn’t give up so easily on games in general. This game is a challenging one mostly because if you do anything adverse, like jump and hit the ceiling, or fall too far or look at an enemy wrong, you take damage. It doesn’t take that much damage to kill you, just like that.
For this, it can be a frustrating game and you may find yourself saying ‘why am I playing this ridiculously hard game??’ If you’re just that much of an Indiana Jones fan, maybe you’d be interested in sitting through this one.
Basically, you’re hunting 4 different artefacts over 4 different levels. Once you find the artefact you must then find the exit to the level, usually pretty easy to find as it’s most always at the end (go until you can’t go any further.) Otherwise, the end will usually make sense and will be obvious.
Indy has, for his main weapon, the whip. He can also punch. If there’s a rope or ladder, push up to climb, and down to descend. Ladders in particular
can be very dangerous as you can still take damage/die when on them. Also, the AI in this game isn’t very efficient so it takes a little practice timing your hits right.
Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade is a side scrolling adventure game similar to Mario Brothers or pitfall. I think these types of games worked especially well in early video gaming. They were easy to follow and to see where your character was in relation to other things on the screen (3D type games got to be very confusing when you were trying to line up your character with an enemy or really anything.) I could play most of the 2D side scrolling games with no problem even if other elements of the game annoyed me.
As far as the graphics, for as early as this game was, the graphics aren’t that bad. You could tell you’re supposed to be playing one of the best action hero’s of the time and as dated as this game was, it still had the ability to put you in the action making you feel like you were part of it. On a whole, not a bad game.
I would still recommend it to most retro-gamers out there who just want to remember the glory days.
