I first remember playing Jungle Strike the sequel to the Gulf War (Desert Storm) Middle East conflict laden Desert Strike on Sega Genesis (at the time also available for Super Nintendo). Form what I remember it was an awesome game. Not a true flight simulator by any means. But, you are pilot a Comanche type of helicopter (armed to the teeth with the military’s “state of the art” weaponry chain gun, hellfire missiles and hydra missiles) in where else but a jungle in the South Pacific or South America maybe, and occasionally some city based missions (Washington, D.
C.).
The game is a single player shooting style game. Where you fly, hover and or bike around the map destroying enemy tanks, encampments and depots. There is a neat in game map that shows mission details and goals, ammo and fuel re-fueling points as well as other “hidden” weapons (my personal favorite is piloting the F-117 stealth fighter). The game consists of about eight or so missions each containing of their own specific set of mission criteria, like taking out hijackers, rescuing hostages / diplomats, and destroying key military emplacements all in an attempt to save the United States of America from emanate doom
As a kid the graphics on friend’s Sega Genesis were so realistic and cool looking. Looking
back now some of the screen shots they do seem a bit grainy and dated. I remember the Washington, D.C. mission being a bit long and having a lot of green grass. Filler material for the programmers I assume.
Jungle Strike and its predecessor Desert Strike are the bases for the future Electronic Arts console games Soviet Strike as well as Nuclear Strike for Play Station. Easily I would say that I’ve spent a majority of my childhood playing the Strike series.
