Out of this world is definitely a unique game, in terms of its style, game play, characters and storyline. Of course the title of the game should already forewarn you that it will involve a strange world inhabited by strange creatures and places.
The storyline goes something like this: You are a scientist who has gone to his lab to do some work at his computer. Meanwhile, outside an electrical storm starts to rage, when suddenly a bolt of lightening is somehow sent from the outside to your computers, and in what seems to happen in a flash, you are transported to another world, still seated at the desk of your computer, inside a pool (strange, isn’t it).
This is where the game play starts. Right away you will start to kill off leech-type baddies by merely stepping on them, or else they will get you with their deadly sting. Soon after, you are chased by a beast that has been watching you from afar. Right before he gets you, he is shot down by a robed man, who, in turn, shoots you rendering you unconscious.
You wake up in what seems like a prison with another alien. You eventually break out of your cell with your new found alien buddy, and throughout the game you both must dodge enemies, while navigating through dungeons, caves, and even a coliseum. This can be a frustrating game, because you really have to think
of how to get passed a certain obstacle, or enemy. Its not just a 'shoot-em and continue' game....there is much strategy involved; a puzzle is you will. Rather than saving your game, you will be given a password at certain points of the game from which you can start from.
The sound effects are quite realistic and dynamic for its time. As for the music, there is next to none (aside from the music in the endgame sequence). The graphics are quite good, allowing for realistic and smooth motions (such as walking and running). As far as the ending is concerned, well, you will have too see. But I felt that it could have offered more closure.
Overall, it's a very well thought out game, and the fact that I found it highly addictive is a good sign. For its time, it had much to offer to anyone that enjoys a complex, inticing, and addicting adventure game.
