Game Review (written by Xyster311) Added on: 10/07/2006
Privateer is one of the best old school flying games. When I was young I had a neighbor who owned this game. Every time they left town I would offer to watch the dogs and without a doubt I would spend the whole time they were on vacation at their house playing this game. The world is expansive; you can travel pretty much wherever you want in it at any stage of the game. Be careful however as if you don't have the greatest ship you are likely to get eaten alive.
The missions are the heart of the game and they don't really get monotonous because of all the action involved.
Choose from different mission types: escort, search and destroy, commodity. You

can go any direction in this game. Upgrading your ship is done completely at your own will with money that you earn from missions making the game very open ended. There are many ship options and many upgrade options for your ship. As your ship gets better and better you can start traveling farther and farther from home. You will need to bring your A game to the battles. The battles are sometimes long, but for the most part pretty enjoyable. You can get outnumbered pretty easy if you aren't careful, and running from a fast ship can sometimes leave you flying to a planet for a good 30 minutes.
There is a decent plot to the game; however, most of the fun will come in preparing you and your ship for the moments of plot. The graphics are great for a game from this time. It's like an RPG version of X-Wing that leaves you a lot more room to create your own destiny. This game can almost be classified as a space RPG. I never really even had a strong desire to win the game; I always had so much fun racing around. You can even make money trading slaves and other commodities. One of the most fun ways to play the game is to go rogue and pillage ships and harvesting their cargo. Trading in the black market can be very profitable, however you don't want to get yourself on the wrong side of the law or you will be running from them for the rest of the game.
Privateer is a definite must for anyone who likes to be thrown into a well thought out world and left to figure out the best out of many ways to thrive in the game.
