Ok, lets talk about this game, R-type is an absolute classic side scrolling shoot’em up arcade game, which set a standard for loads of other side scrollers, which never really lived up to the original. This version is more or less exact to the arcade version, down to the last little space ship. You start as a basic ship with nothing more than a single bullet to bash the buttons, but progress and pick up an impressive although limited amount of power ups which each have there own advantages and disadvantages, depending which level you are on, the blue one is my favourite, as it helps on almost every level.

This game isn’t easy and will take a while to master,
but once mastered, it can be very addictive and / or frustrating but I love it. The bosses start of being rather easy on level one and two, but the third of which the boss is basically the full level become harder and more challenging.
At first, I thought I would fly through this as I was one of those young teenagers, who spent my Saturdays in the local arcade whacking ten pence after ten pence into numerous arcade classics, of which some I wish I could remember the name of but not to worry, if you’re a fan of the most recent but sadly remote side scrollers, which have much bigger levels and vastly improved graphics and have never tried the oldies such as r-type, I would strongly recommend you to give it a go, as it will give you a feel of nostalgia if you are old enough and a good laugh if not.
There are other and more updated versions of this game on consoles of which I haven’t had the pleasure to try myself, but would love to give them a bash. All in all this title is one, if not the best in my opinion, of a vast number of games from this period and would hate to see it forgotten, you basically can’t go wrong with this, if you’re a button basher fan. The controls are very basic: up, down, left, right, fire and you can also fire the piece of artillery which powers you up, and upon holding fire you can fire an almighty cannon blast, which will penetrate almost anything.
I still to this day haven’t completed this but upon finding it here I’m going to give it my best, a great game. Definitely ten out of ten. Play this game.
