I’ve chosen to review RAMBO 3 as it is one of the earliest games I can remember playing when I was a kid. We didn’t own a computer back then but I played it on a mate's computer in 1990 and thought it was the coolest thing ever. I downloaded the game and played it again recently and it reminded me just how far our beloved p.c. games have come along over the last 20 years. If you are looking for amazing graphics this game is not for you, however the game play is reasonable.
The name of the game, like the movie, is to kill your enemies and achieve the mission goals. Rambo III first came out in 1988 made by Taito Americo Corp.
Rambo begins the game with only a knife, however there is a weapons menu which is one of the best features of the game. As you progress Rambo’s firepower increases to an arsenal of weapons that you can swap around. There is no experience progression in this game though, unfortunately(no levelling up for all you RPG fans ), but it does keep track of your score and offers a high score board so you can challenge your mates. You will find it difficult to progress far in this game without some stealth and
strategy as you only have the traditional 3 continues. It is tempting to charge headlong into battles but you should take it slow and observe the movement of the guards and always attack from behind if possible and wait for the opportune moment for maximum game length. Rambo III is a 2D overview game and plays happily through my Dosbox program in windows vista. It also has a cool new feature which allows the player to control the game with the mouse rather than the traditional directional keys and space bar. Rambo III does have extensive levels with a variety of foes and challenges to overcome. Sound effex are limited and primitive but not essential anyway. The missions and story line follows the movie closely so all those Sylvester Stalone fans will be running to their local stores to hire the Rambo III all over again! Overall Rambo III was a highly enjoyable classic game which entertained me for hours on end. I would give Rambo III a score of eight out of ten compared to other games of the same period. Everybody will enjoy!!!!
