Raycrisis' PC port from playstation is the third installment in one of the best 3D playstation-era shooter games released. Raycrisis is a nice addition to the series of Raycrisis games, though it lacks a few things that would have made it a much better game.
Graphics: 7
Graphics are exactly what you would expect, especially considering it was released initially for the Playstation before it was ported to the PC. As a result the graphics are limited to the engine used to play the game on the PS, although very well done regardless.
I would have liked to have seen a higher resolution option though since it should have been at least capable of doing that for the PC version.
Sound: 7
The soundtrack and effects are right on with similar shooters of this genre. Heavy explosions, techno soundtrack, you know the drill. There was only one thing that bothered me about the sound that seems persistent in all the Layer Selection games, the targeting sound is a high pitched beep which, when you're up against countless waves of enemies, can become very obnoxious when you're constantly hearing a piercing beep for each enemy that moves under your crosshair.
Story: 3
It's a prequel to Rayforce's story. A super computer is destroying the world so it's up to you to jack into it and destroy it with
your ship, the wave rider. Nothing really inspiring here.
Difficulty: 9
Granted, it’s been awhile since I've played any shooters but I couldn't beat this game for about 3 weeks on just the normal setting. There are a total of 3 difficulties of increasing difficulty from normal to insane so there's definitely no lack of challenge to say the least. The bosses are the most difficult part out of anything because like most games, there's pretty much no where you can move your ship without getting destroyed.
Gameplay: 5
The gameplay is very similar to the earlier Layer Selection games as well as other shooters, so there's no really big change here. It can get a little bit repetitive on later levels but there are 3 wave riders to pick from which keeps the gameplay a lot more fresh. The only major gripes I have are the lack of 2 player co-op mode and the levels are a little bit shorter than average for games of this genre.
Overall: 6
Raycrisis is a fun game and a fantastic time killer for people looking for a tough and great looking shooter. It's definitely not as good as the earlier Layer Selection games Rayforce and Raystorm but overall fun game to say the least. This game would have gotten a better rating if the stages were a little longer and there was a two player mode to boot. Regardless, a game I had a great time playing, but nothing truly epic among shooters.
