RayForce is nothing if not full of names. It is actually an extremely popular arcade game, but if the gamer does not recognize this title, he may have to look to a new one. RayForce was called Layer Selection in many venues outside of Asia. In Europe, it was Gunlock, and in the United States it was known as Galactic Attack. It is a space shooter that primarily features a vertical scroll (with a few small horizontally scrolling sequences) and a nice science fiction theme.
It was originally an arcade hit by Taito, but was redone for multiple formats, including the Sega Saturn and the personal computer running Windows. The original version for the PC was released in the late nineties and is a faithful adaptation of the
arcade smash hit. RayForce also spawned a related series, with some of the titles including RayStorm and RayCrisis.
The story of RayForce sees the world in the future. A gigantic supercomputer named Con-Human has been created to help the world regulate its rising environmental difficulties. It will be this computer’s job to defend Earth’s lifeforms and make certain that all parts of the environment are nourished and maintained. By some accident, however, a human clone manages to link with Con-Human, and the computer becomes not only sentient but power hungry and criminally insane. It begins shirking its duties and causing devastating disasters which destroy the very beings that the computer was created to protect. It nearly eradicates the human race, with only a few stragglers evacuating the planet and fleeing to a space station. With its biggest competitor gone, Con-Human revamps the look of planet Earth by changing its very core. Earth becomes a gigantic body for Con-Human, as well as a mobile battleship. The remaining humans develop a superior space craft called the RVA-818 X-LAY and decide to use it to stop the monstrous computer by destroying the entire planet. The gamer will pilot this craft.
As shooters go, RayForce is great. It only features two weapons, a laser and missile launcher, but locating power ups can turn them into very formidable arms. The missile launcher, at its highest potential, can lock onto eight different targets. The scroll is good, the animations are great, and the panning camera angles are also interesting. RayForce, while a classic arcade shooter, is nothing short of brilliant and comes highly recommended for an exciting download.
