What can I say about Revolution X? I remember playing this in my early teens with my brother. The game offers a lot of fun game play, if you’re into simple shoot’em ups that is. The main feature of this game would have to be the fact it features Aerosmith, one of the greatest rock bands to have graced a stage. In the game, a terrorist faction known as the New World Order have abducted Aerosmith, and it’s your job to free them and put an end to the New World Order.
One of the great things I found about the game is the simplicity of the game play, combined with cheesy references and enemies. I mean, the main enemy is a dominatrix looking woman known as ‘Mistress Helga’. The shooting is quite simple, and there are upgrades to your weapon to be picked up during the game. You also have the ability to throw explosive CDs at your enemies as well, which can be collected during the game.
All in all there are five levels, and in each of these levels it is possible to find a hidden secret, that being one of the band members of Aerosmith. During the level, you'll also have the option of selecting which path you want to follow,
although this choice is quite limited, and doesn't really do much except help unlock certain secrets in the game. The bosses at the end of these levels prove a minor challenge, but do add one of the few challenges the game has to offer, apart from its many secrets. These secrets usually revolve around shooting certain parts of the background, or defeating a particularly stronger enemy. These secrets are usually quite challenging, as there is a limited time frame to do them in.
As Revolution X has the option for two players, I think this is the best way to play the game, as it’s certainly more fun playing cheesy shoot’em ups with a friend, especially if both of you enjoy Aerosmith. The sound quality of the game is good (for it’s era), and I found overall the soundtrack to be somewhat entertaining, at least it makes good background music for the game. The graphics are decent, with some elements of 3D coming into play, but in reality it is simply a 2D game. The layering is average at best, but some of the enemies do look quite cool. All in all, I’d recommend Revolution X to anyone that would like to spend a bit of their afternoon with a good mate, simply laughing and having a good time playing a shoot’em up for some fun.
