H.U.N.T (High-risk United Nations Task-force), a team of special operatives, is sent to San Nicolas Island to investigate a deadly cult. They soon learn that the cult plans to destroy nearby Los Angeles, and then must enter the cult’s monastery and somehow stop the cult’s plans.
You can choose to play one of the following characters: Taradino Cassatt, Thi Barrett, Lorelei
Ni, Doug Wendt, and Ian Paul Freeley. Each character has a unique ability. Doug can sustain a large amount of damage; yet he moves quite slowly. And then there is the reverse: Lorelei can’t take many hits, but is very quick.
The game play’s main objectives are to kill as many enemies as possible and to collect keys in order to advance through the levels. You also will need to use your brain in this game as problem-solving skills and tactical maneuvers are needed to reach some difficult locations.
You will confront numerous enemies, with each type having different strengths and capabilities. The Lightning Guard can take a weapon or armor from the player and then use the weapon. The Low Guards are sneaky as they can be found lying on the ground, ready to ambush the player. And there are bosses you will have to fight, with one being a robot. The final boss, El Oscuro, the head of the Triad cult, returns fire in the same way he was attacked if he is hit by a heat-seeking missile, he sends one back to you.
Besides enemies to look out for, you will encounter many hazards. You can get hurt by flame jets or spin blades (large blades attached to stacks of gyrating blocks). Even your enemies can get injured by the hazards.
The weapons system used in ROTT is above other games of its time. The weapons unleash a never-before-seen brutality and realism. You can carry up to four weapons at a time. There are 11 weapons in this game. The bullet weapons (which have unlimited ammo) are: pistol, dual pistols, and an MP40 automatic submachine gun. The missile weapons (with varying amounts of ammo) are: bazooka, heat-seeker, drunk, flame wall, firebomb, and split. The magic weapons (with varying amounts of ammo) are The Dark Staff, and The Excalibat.
There are many other features included in ROTT. You can obtain Power-ups and receive bonuses for a variety of achievements (such as picking up all missile weapons in a level). When the computer’s time reaches certain dates, you will see the image of the HUNT team change, such as one wearing a Santa hat or holding an American Flag. ROTT allows up to 11 people to play simultaneously. There are also 9 multiplayer modes some of which don’t involve shooting each other.
Rise of the Triad is a classic great game. It is an awesome shooter game with great graphics and sound effects. For those not afraid of some blood and guts, this game is a must-download.
