Star Fox move aside, here comes star goose!!! Well maybe it's the other way around. However star Goose is a one of the first games I played as a child and holds a special place in my heart. It’s definitely not bad, but I can't say too much more than that. A top down space shooter, you traverse semi-three dimensional landscapes, which because it seems more like your crawling instead of flying renders the game, for all intensive purposes, 2D. However the game presents a lot of challenges and some interesting twists.
Normally the gameplay revolves around flying along the level, collecting magical diamonds of different colors. (Hmmmm this is starting to remind me of another more popular animal game *cough* sonic *cough*). As you play the level over and over and over and over and over until you realize this, you may become very good at shooting the oncoming enemies which all seem to go in the opposite direction as you. At the same time, you have deal with turrets shooting little round yellow bullets, larger green grenades/ mortars, and deadly missiles which seem undodgeable.
Then all of a sudden the gameplay switches up. Whether it’s between levels or in bonus caves, you'll find yourself given the chance to score back those depleted shields,
missiles, or points as you fly through a vector map cave which you can "run" up and down the sides of (*cough* ITS SONIC *cough* SONIC 2 *cough*). When not in a cave collecting these “spheres of delight,” one must face the normal dilemmas that a space shooter offers…
How do I kill that guy? When should I shot my missiles? Is that an energy crystal or an enemy turret? How do I avoid those crazy missile machines? How did this goose get his licensed to fly a deadly spacecraft? Is it possible that I'm on the wrong side of the road? As the Star Goose relies of pure repetitive gameplay I’m sure you’ll find the answer to all of these questions when you download it and play it over and over.
In my opinion, this game is great. If you liked hedgehogs that run half-pipes and collect magic gemstones. I mean gooses. Geese? Gooses? Whatever, if you like animals and mediocre gameplay, this title is for you. Or maybe it’s just for me and reminiscing. Yeah that sounds about right.
