If you're looking for a fun, challenging, and addicting arcade game, then you're obviously looking for Supaplex. In Supaplex, you enter into the world of Murphy, a small, red, and smiley little fellow, who seems like he's having the time of his life as the bug hunter inside a computer.
The object of the game is simple. Murphy must collect infotrons and reach the exit, (and here is the challenge) not get killed in the process. Gameplay is rather easy as well, with the arrows of your keyboard doing all the work for Murphy.
What is not simple is beating this game. Each levels (of which there are one hundred and eleven of) brings new challenges, be it collecting a large amount of infotrons, finding the exit of a maze, or dodging zonks, which have a similar result of explosives if you're unlucky enough to get hit with them. There are also other obstacles, such as scissors, or "snik snaks" as they are called in the game, which needless to say, are a hazard for the health of Murphy.
The soundtrack of the game is decent, with a classic computer like techno beat going on. The music also has a gloomy feel to as well, adding a sense of the dramatic to the game. This game requires a quick
mind to figure out solutions for each level and even quicker reflexes, as you need to get Murphy moving in case of a "zonk" drop.
While there are many great things about this game, I do find that the lack of controls instructions a bit frustrating. One can go online and find the controls in a walkthrough type article for the game, yet I believe including instructions in the game would be a lot simpler. Another downside to the game is that if you are stuck in an area, surrounded by zonks and ram chips, one of the inedible and impassable parts of the background, you are forced to start the level over.
It might be that modern games have spoiled us all with numbered lives and continues a thing of the past. Supaplex does give you and unlimited number of continues and also clocks your time on each level, giving you the ability to not only defeat the levels of the game itself, but challenge yourself to defeating them as quick as you can. And what to do when you've thoroughly beat all one hundred and eleven levels? Why not go back to the beginning and beat them quicker? With great replay value, fairly simple to learn controls, and a challenging, yet so addicting gameplay, Supaplex tops the list of great arcade games.
