With Super Bubsy, parents do not have to worry about checking for an ESRB rating before acquiring it for their children. Many games based on an animated character still contain lewd ideas, violence or questionable language. This is not the case with Super Bubsy, making it appropriate for children to play and still great fun for those adults that refuse to grow up! This game is basically a sequel to the original Bubsy, who starred in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind. It is fast-paced, dynamic, fun and available for one or two players.
The hero of this animated gem by Accolade is Bubsy the Bobcat. The gamer needs to guide Bubsy the Bobcat through sixteen levels of play at varying degrees of difficulty. Each level comes with a time limit, which means the gamer needs to quickly learn a mastery of the controls. No one can afford to repeat maneuvers because they missed their first jump. The object is to collect items to increase score and to defeat enemies by bouncing on them. Bubsy tackles this adventure with some comical narrative in a hilarious cartoon voice. Some of the music and witty commentary provided by Bubsy himself have made their way into modern culture as popular cellular phone ring tones.
While it is not as popular as similar game such
as the Super Mario Brothers series, Sonic the Hedgehog, or even Earthworm Jim, Super Bubsy does offer a variety of levels to negotiate, numerous bonus items to collect, adorable graphics and great color. The levels tend to be very large and impressively designed, and many include themes that add to the interest level. Bubsy is obviously cute and funny as ever, and the sound effects are very good.
Even though Super Bubsy seems to be mindless entertainment that is suitable for only the young or young at heart, there is more of a goal than one would think. In a subplot revolving around a Bubsy Cartoon TV pilot, gamers can catch power-ups shaped like bouncing televisions. As these bonus items are gathered, more and more of the cartoon is revealed for gamers to view. So for those gamers who are not competitive enough to continue play just to reach the next greatest high, score Accolade offers a carrot to lure them along.
