Developed by Softgold and released by Lucasfilm Games, Super Star Wars is a middle nineties release that represents the first in a series of video games based on the Star Wars Trilogy. It is essentially a platform game featuring multiple playable characters that represent characters from the various movies. It was originally created for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and was later ported to the PC, as well as other formats.
The PC version of the game features an excellent conversion, with cleaner graphics and better color.
MIDI and WAV files replaced the tinny audio from the SNES, much improving all of the sound elements of the game. The game play was made much smoother than previous issues of the game, and only PCs featuring the worst graphics cards would have issues with it. In all, the PC version is much improved. It was converted by a small company called Brain Bug, and was, unfortunately, cancelled for release upon very near completion due to changes in management at LucasArts. Only issues such as this one exist. It can’t be purchased in stores.
The plot very closely follows the original Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It revolves around the tale of two droids, one of which holds the plans for the Death
Star, the Empire’s superweapon. The droids are eventually purchased by Luke Skywalker, the son of the Empire’s leader, Darth Vader. The boy is also an aspiring Jedi Knight. The story continues to unfold from there. There have been some minor changes to make the game more suitable to a platformer, but for the most part, the storyline is true. The user can choose various Star Wars characters to play, including Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca the Wookie. Each of the characters has a different preferred weapon, such as blasters or light sabers. All of them are fun to play. At the end of each skillfully designed level resides a boss character, also reflecting a character from the movie. The main boss at the end of the game is none other than Darth Vader.
In short, it is too bad that Super Star Wars was never officially released for PC because it was a major improvement over many of the other ports. It features excellent game play, superior graphics, and great sound…all the while following (mostly) the story line of the great Star Wars movies. A Star Wars fan or overall gaming buff can’t go wrong with this download. Give it a chance and see what the world missed with this nonrelease.
