Hello readers I’m doing a review on the classic game TYRIAN.
Any dos game fanatic should have this game, have played this game or at least heard of it. It is your classic scrolling shooter RPG style game in the fact that you can upgrade your ship.
This is a game I remember playing as a child on my parents first ever computer a 386 with 500mb hard drive. ‘Wow at the time that was huge’. I would play Tyrian for hours on end I would some time get in trouble for trying to sneak out of my room to play it after my bed time.
‘Hehehe I loved it that much’.
The graphics of this game are excellent although out-dated by today’s standards. The simple graphics engine allows for great game play and stability. The sounds in the game are of a good quality with lots of midi music through out the game and all of its levels. This music can be played through the juke box which is in the games setup.exe file in the game directory.
The controls are simple, use your mouse, keyboard, joy-stick or game pad any of which are simple.
Left click on your mouse fires primary weapons front and back, right click fires you sidekick weapons unless they are the sort that shot as part of your primary weapons in this case they and an unlimited supply of ammo.
It was released
around 1994-1995 I believe, I’m not sure now. Its publishers were Eclipse and stealth productions inc.
There are several modes in which to play, which are:
1 player full game
1 player arcade
1 player timed battle
2 player arcade
In the arcade modes you and your friend if it's a 2 player fly around blow things up and collect purple balls and weapons and weapon upgrades.
In single player full game you fly around on each level destroying your enemy with your ship’s weapons which you can upgrade and change with the credit you earn from destroying your enemy ships and the likes.
There are vast arrays of enemies which are small ships, large ships, ground turrets and spikes that fly out of nowhere and last but not least THE BOSSES, which are a much larger ship than what you'll destroy as you fly through the levels.
Through the game you'll fight over land, floating platforms water and in space.
After you finish the level you'll be shown a list of stats then after all this you return to your game menu where you can upgrade your ship to your preferences by selecting the upgrade ship menu from here you can change your ship type, front and rear guns your shield, generator and left and right sidekicks.
My personal choice is one that I find is best for blasting almost every thing around and this is what I use:
ship type: the stalker 21.126
front gun: laser
rear gun: sonic wave (good because you can change its firing direction via enter button during game play)
shield: MicroCorp HXS Class C
generator: Gravitron Pulse-Wave
I have a few sidekicks I like to use and are displayed in my order of preference
left and right sidekicks: Plasma storm ammo 6 , atom bombs ammo 20, mini-missile ammo 100
These are of course my choice of weapons and equipment many of you may use different ones. Now you set for your next mission with your new or upgraded weapons and shield.
Mix and match your weapons and ship components to what you like best that’s the beautiful thing about this game that got me hooked so many years ago.
This game must be one of the best games from the time it was released till now and maybe forever.
