Zaxxon was such a great game during the nineteen eighty’s. You wouldn't believe how cool it looked at the time. It was really different. For one thing - it was the first game that was in color and in 3-d that I had ever seen. It is basically just a space shooter, but the sounds and 3-d look was all new in 1982.
This game is fun in short bursts, but back then I really thought this game was hard. The cannons, the force fields and the other ships.
.. there was always something up ahead to keep you from blinking or even resting your hand.
The funnny thing about this game was that it really made you want to hit everything in sight to rise up your score. This element really made you die like crazy because there is really no way you could have ever hoped to accomplish this without smashing into a brick wall or vaporizing yourself in a force energy field.
Good luck when you enter the zones that don’t give you the ground to give you a frame of reference. Your shadow on the ground was really a life saver in judging how to cram your ship through the holes in the walls and over and under the weird
series of obstacles that were always being put in your path. Without the shadow following you around on the ground you were really on your own. Some kids kind of figured out a trick to always know when you were in just the right spot, but really you were supposed to be able to fly the ship and just wing it - but the graphics were never good enough to enable me to do this.
