Dark Sun: Shattered Lands

Genre: Role-Playing    |     Year: 1993    |     Publisher: Strategic Simulations, Inc.    |     Developer: Strategic Simulations Inc. (SSI)
Game Review (written by Eric) Added on: 02/16/2008
Dark Sun: Shattered Lands is a turn-based role playing game that was released for DOS in 1993 by Strategic Simulations Inc. The game is based in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Rulebook (AD&D).
The game is set in a fantasy land called Athas in a city called Draj controlled by a sorcerer king. You are in charge of leading a group of four gladiators who need to escape from the arena where they are condemned to fight it out until they die in a battle or until they die naturally.
These gladiators fight with other men for the sole purpose of entertaining people. After the gladiators escape they must now unite the free cities around Draj to go against Drajís armies and to free the city from the cruel leaderís oppression.
Your team can be composed of half-giants, Tri-Keens (insect-like creatures) and humanoids. The half-giants give your team an advantage in terms of size. The Tri-Keen, because of their insect-like quality of having many hands, you get more hits with just one turn. There is a predetermined group which you can play or you can build you own group. If you are new to the game I suggest you use the preset group as creating your own group can be pretty overwhelming what with all the

statistics and information that will be presented to you.
In the game you will be doing a lot of interaction with other characters. Even other gladiators that will be with you in the arena can help you escape with the information you provide and also with the experience that they will provide your character in the game. When you are already playing the game, you can change the leader of the team depending on what the situation requires. Some characters in the game have different reaction depending who is talking to them from the team.
The controls are very easy as you only need your mouse or your keyboard to move men around the screen. As for the interaction with characters, there are questions that are presented to you on the screen and you just need to pick out an answer from the choices.
The game also involves combat missions where you need to employ strategic moves to be able to win. You need to have the right formation and make use of the right spells to successfully fight against Drajís armies.
The sequel to this game Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager was released in 1994.

Loved this game. Still can't get enough of Dark Sun and Athas. Spent more time on character generation than playing, I think.

awesome game. i have been looking for it for a decade. Dark Sun is the first d and d game I played as a kid. I never got a chance to play the sequel Wake of the ravager. Anyone have any thoughts on this game? is it any good.

I played this game when I was about 10. I can remember it for its story and its music the most. This is seriously one of the best games out there.

DarkSun was a new direction for RPG in general introducing a new world bereft of water and metals and empowering most with psionic abilities of some sort adding another dimension to characters. The world is rich in imagination and the game transfers the depth onto the computer screen very effectively. A new game engine was utilised and the gameplay was very straightforward without detracting from the quality of play or story. You start off as third level characters or equivalent as the monsters are tough (this is a tough world!) and the psionics add another dimension to how nasty said creattures can be. The game is challenging without being impossible. There are penty of quests and hidden sections yielding suitably interesting items. Still one of my favorite worlds. Enjoy.
