Dark Sun: Shattered Lands is a turn-based role playing game that was released for DOS in 1993 by Strategic Simulations Inc. The game is based in the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Rulebook (AD&D).
The game is set in a fantasy land called Athas in a city called Draj controlled by a sorcerer king. You are in charge of leading a group of four gladiators who need to escape from the arena where they are condemned to fight it out until they die in a battle or until they die naturally. These gladiators fight with other men for the sole purpose of entertaining people. After the gladiators escape they must now unite the free cities around Draj to go against Draj’s armies and to free the city from the cruel leader’s oppression.
Your
team can be composed of half-giants, Tri-Keens (insect-like creatures) and humanoids. The half-giants give your team an advantage in terms of size. The Tri-Keen, because of their insect-like quality of having many hands, you get more hits with just one turn. There is a predetermined group which you can play or you can build you own group. If you are new to the game I suggest you use the preset group as creating your own group can be pretty overwhelming what with all the statistics and information that will be presented to you.
In the game you will be doing a lot of interaction with other characters. Even other gladiators that will be with you in the arena can help you escape with the information you provide and also with the experience that they will provide your character in the game. When you are already playing the game, you can change the leader of the team depending on what the situation requires. Some characters in the game have different reaction depending who is talking to them from the team.
The controls are very easy as you only need your mouse or your keyboard to move men around the screen. As for the interaction with characters, there are questions that are presented to you on the screen and you just need to pick out an answer from the choices.
The game also involves combat missions where you need to employ strategic moves to be able to win. You need to have the right formation and make use of the right spells to successfully fight against Draj’s armies.
The sequel to this game Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager was released in 1994.
