Developed by FTL Games, the same designer as its predecessors, Dungeon Master 2: The Legend of Skullkeep is an action and role playing game hybrid that was published by the Interplay Entertainment Corporation and released for play on the personal computer in the middle nineties. It was sent to many other formats, such as the Amiga and the Sega. It offers much focus on puzzle solving and features a cool medieval or fantasy theme. This is a real time game and is played entirely from the first person perspective. This is a true sequel to the original Dungeon Master, with the game Chaos Strikes Back sandwiched in between the two games. Chaos Strikes Back is more of an add on or expansion pack, featuring the same game
engine as the original, while The Legend of Skullkeep could better be called a sequel.
Some of the changes between the first Dungeon Master game and the Legend of Skullkeep are immediately obvious while others are more subtle. The very first things gamers will notice are improved graphics and a much higher quality sound. The game now also features an auto mapping device, making navigating the caverns in three dimensional first person much less frustrating. The Legend of Skullkeep also features a significant above ground episode, where the user will find himself visiting villages and running through dense forests, similar to a more traditional role playing game.
There is a definitive goal in Dungeon Master 2, and that is to stop the lackeys of Dragoth from forming the Zo gate. Once the Zo gate is complete, Dragoth will be able to enter Skullkeep, gaining safety and insurmountable power. To stop the construction, the gamer will have to battle many enemies by assembling a group of heroes. The user begins in a tomb underground filled with coffins, and the user can choose the remainder of his party by opening the lids on the caskets and resurrecting the heroes within. One more significant difference between the first and second Dungeon Masters was the puzzling. The Legend of Skullkeep relies much more on battle sequences to keep the user interested and less on puzzles, which were the crux of the initial game. Even Chaos Strikes Back was laden with very difficult puzzles, and is probably the most difficult, logically speaking, of the three games. The Legend of Skullkeep is going to require the user to better equip his sword than his brain and will call for a lot of fighting action. If this change is okay for you, than be sure to download this one, for it is part of a really good series.
