I originally purchased this game back when it was released on store shelves, when Anime had not quite caught up with the United States. Knights of Xentar, is the 3rd game in a series that was originally released in Japan as “Dragon Knights”, later 2 of the games were made into short Anime Movies. Knights of Xentar was never made into a movie, however, the PSX Dragon Knights 4 was. This game was originally released as a Teen game, however, for 5 dollars more you were able to purchase an “update” that would unlock the adult material for the game.
The adult material is “hentai-ish” however does not go into the detail that most movies you would see, and mostly contains bare breast, and interesting positions, but that is about it.
The dialogue in the game is humorous at best, but then again, this game was not made to contain a strong plot. The graphics in this game are solid for a VGA game at the time and plays differently than most RPG’s at the time.
The combat system for the game is automated with giving you control of the strategy of your characters as well as using items such as heal potions and escaping from battle if needed.
You start out the game as the main character Desmond, the young ambitious character
that is looking for adventure and the warmth of a lovely lady next to him. Desmond is robbed of his Genji equipment, and sets out to recover it from the thugs that stole it from him. In his quest to get his equipment back, he encounters sexual side quests of saving damsels in distress and getting rewarded for it afterwards.
Towards the middle of the game you meet up with 2 other characters that will help you in the game which is Rolf (the big burly Tank) and a female character which Desmond has had a prior relationship with who will act as the Mage, or healer of the group. This will take you to the end of the game where you must fight the evil Master Mind of the game which Desmond will have to do solo. The dramatic effect is lost (if there was ever a dramatic part of the game) due to the automated combat system listed above.
This game is not Final Fantasy with adult imagery, and takes around 8-12 hours to finish the game. While I did enjoy this game when I originally played it back in my youth, I would say that it is worth a quick play, and you may get addicted to it and want to see what happens next. However, you may decide to drop it if you just can’t get past the horrid dialogue. Just remember, this game wasn’t made to be serious.
