Megatraveller is a game based in a universe where the far reaching Imperium has ruled for a thousand years, purely surviving due to the rule of the emperor. A single person who commanded the devout loyalty of every man, woman and child.
With the emperor dead, and no heirs to claim his throne, a stranger takes his place… The man who killed him!
Much like the board game that this PC classic is based on, almost everything is generated randomly so that game play is always different and changed by what you do and where you go.
Characters and their skills, the places you visit and people you meet along with who you fight and what you collect along the way make the game very different depending on how you liked to play.
Although the graphics and the style of game now seem quite dated, the rest of the game has a lot to offer enthusiasts as it is true to the original board game which has literally volumes of stories to back up the main theme. Also, if you're used to playing a lot of very fast moving first person games, you notice quite quickly that the controls for the game do seem quite basic and almost too simple. The mouse doesn't play heavily in controlling the game so it
can take a little getting used to if it's not what you've grown accustomed to!
While playing the game though, I noticed that most of the fun I had was when I was roaming from planet to planet and misbehaving. The local authorities usually let you get away with quite a lot before deciding to do something about it, but this for me was part of its charm. Being good also had its advantages, which sometimes included unlikely friends and so fourth, so I learned to mix it up a bit.
I also quite enjoyed building up my characters and kitting him out with all sorts of fancy weaponry and having them fly around in all manner of ships, and send them to places you wouldn't normally want to venture.
I also found, that with fighting being a large part of the game, you find you have a taste for certain types of weaponry. It can get quite fun when you get a gun that can pretty much do whatever your imagination can create or simply find a good solid club and end your differences that way!
On the whole, I'd say that although MegaTraveller will probably not be considered a timeless classic, it would still give any avid gamer something original to experience.
