Game Review 1 (written by Katschindler) Added on: 03/22/2009
I played this game when I was pretty young, around 9 years old I suppose, and got completely hooked on it. I’m sure you all remember the days when you would sneak on the computer after school when your parents were still at work. Well this is exactly the kind of game you would have been looking for. Also I remember telling my father about this game, which was a massive mistake, seen as he hogged the PC from then on. So this game is clearly for all ages and genders.

The game was released in 1979 for the TRS-80 and the Atari and Apple one year later. In the mid 80’s it was re-released with improved graphics for the Atari and IBM PCs.
The graphics were really good back then but you obviously can not compare them with what is out nowadays. But being on this website you are probably looking for old classics and this one is just the ticket.
In this single player game you play as adventurer, exploring the dungeon of the Temple Apshai, battling your way through the monster invested rooms, one by one. I have to admit that I have never finished the game when I was younger, so I can not tell you the exact number of

rooms.
On your way you look for treasures and pick up weapons; like swords, battle axes etc, and amour. The weapons and amour get better the further you are in the game. Your character also ‘levels up’ as you proceed, in order to match your strengths to that of the monsters which try to stop you from advancing. There is quite a variety of monsters, considering how old this game is.
Along with the game, comes a printed manual with witch you can match the on screen room number and find out hints and clues, to help you on your way, by drawing your attention to a specific part of the screen, or maybe hinting at the monsters that will attack, and giving you an idea of how to best them.
This game is really enjoyably and will keep you fighting on for hours at a time.

Game Review 2 (written by Ninmic7) Added on: 02/02/2007
While I have only played one of the 3 games in the Temple of Apshai Trilogy, Gateway to Apshai, it’s one of those games that have stuck with me since my youth. The graphics are good. I can only hope that the rest of the trilogy lives up to this incredible second instalment.
From the moment you enter the 1st dungeon, the fight to stay alive begins. As far as I can remember, this game is the grandfather of the action RPG genre. It’s depth of monsters, weapons and spells rivals games from the next generation, and the fun factor is as good as or better than even the current generation of action RPG. What makes it truly great is that and the graphics are great. Like a great book, the game allows your mind to take over and make the experience of game play unique for each player.
While newer and more technologically advanced games eventually replaced Gateway in my life, it is just one of those games that I've never been able to forget. If you haven't played it, I highly recommend that you pick it up and experience this classic for yourself.
